Where do I draw the line?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Where do I draw the line?
By Enchens on Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 11:56 am:

Ok, some of you may know about my seatbelt incident for my ds stuffed puppy, Fix-It. Now, I have been informed that Fix-It has a birthday. My son wants to celebrate it, and he says that Fix-It wants balloons at her party. Do I take this as seriously as the seatbelt incident, or is he just pushing it? I was very shocked when I heard I may have to throw another party. Both of my ds birthdays are coming up soon, the 23 and 25. Not to mention we just got done with the Easter celebration.

By Annie2 on Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 12:15 pm:

Why not? Balloons are so inexpensive. I wouldn't make a big party but maybe a family party after dinner or a playmate or two, when they are playing at your house.

When I broke my leg at age 6, my teddybear got a "cast", too, at the hospital. When my dd broke her arm a few years ago her pink bunny got a "cast", too. Indulge your child's imagination.

As you know, they don't stay little forever. Have fun! :)

I don't think it would hurt anything. You could have the kids make cards and make cupcakes or something. If you had any leftover decorations from parties, that could make it seem more like a party without costing you anything. You could let your kids take charge more than at "real" parties. I say just have fun!

By Kate on Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 12:33 pm:

We've had many parties for dolls and teddies... It's usually just me and DD and the birthday doll, altho if it's at night Daddy is included, too. The cake is whatever cookie or cupcake or treat is in the house. Balloons are easy. Party hats are almost always in supply from leftover parties...it's short and sweet here, nothing elaborate.

By Tripletmom on Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 01:09 pm:

Lots of stuffed animal parties here too :) We have picnics, birthday and just because parties.Ditto Annie, they are only little once:)

By Bellajoe on Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 01:11 pm:

I would even make it easier. Your profile says he's 2. If he's still 2, you can probably get away with having a fake party. Do you have play food? Set the table with the pretend play food, a pretend cake or maybe just some cookies or whatever is in the house and you and ds can just sing happy birthday to Fix It. If you have some leftover balloons from past parties, blow up one or two of then and let the kids bounce the balloons back and forth.

Put on some music too. All good parties have music :)

So this is normal??? I kinda feel silly throwing a party for Fix-It. I understand what you ladies are saying. They are only young once, and my son has such an active imagination. I guess having a party for Fix-It is no different from pretending to rescue animals in our backyard, like scarlet macaws and chinchillas.
Well, everyone, I guess Fix-It is turning one. Unless I'm told otherwise. Of course you'd have to convert to doggy years. lol

Thank you, ladies.

By Kate on Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 01:46 pm:

Oh yes, very, very normal. And Fix It may turn one again next month...or he may turn ten....you just never know!! :)

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 04:43 pm:

I'd say indulge his imagination! You never what your little guy might remember of all this and it might be very special. They grow up too fast, too!

By Vicki on Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 05:17 pm:

VERY normal. Is he potty training yet? I remember having to take baby dolls to the bathroom in stores!! Dd didn't have to go, but the baby did..... she wouldn't let it go either telling me the baby would have an accident in her panties. I have done many strange things in the name of her imagination. LOL

By Kate on Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 05:22 pm:

DD 6 chose to do this today. I was craving a good dessert anyway, so I did bake an actual cake and we will have candles and balloons. She took leftover blank invitations from her own party and wrote out invitations to me, her father, and her sister. So folks, after dinner tonight Cassie the dragon turns one! And we will be in full celebratory mode here in Dragon Land. :)

By Enchens on Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 07:19 pm:

LOL, Kate. It's nice to know this is normal. I decided to celebrate Fix-It's birthday along with my to sons. Since all three birthdays are close together. We invited Grandma and Grandpa last night. I went to the store earlier and while I was there, went ahead and bought some cheap decorations and candles. I need them anyway.
BTW, Happy Birthday, Cassie the Dragon!

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 07:24 pm:

LOL! Have fun at your birthday party tonight! I think I would want real cake, too!

By Kate on Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 07:31 pm:

We had a nice party, complete with Dragon Tales partyware. The guest of honor sat on the table and had her top scales teased into a new hairstyle. The hostess ate both her cake and Cassie's cake. She also snuffed out the candle for her. She was excited to use the candle snuffer instead of blowing them out. We took pics. I'll now have good stuff to eat tonight during Amazing Race and Apprentice.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 11:34 pm:

Kate, that was so nice of you! My kids never asked me to have a party, for their special buddy! Your daughter will treasure this memory!

By Kate on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 12:01 am:

Cassie appreciates your kind sentiments. She will no doubt turn one again soon. Strange...on the show she seems more like six or so, but I guess the camera adds years...

When my oldest DD was little she insisted on having a 'scary car wash party'. We were clueless....she said we had to hang scary decorations that she made from the front porch. Grandma was then invited and we washed her car in the driveway with the decorations blowing in the breeze... That one never made any sense to me, but it was harmless, Grandma was available, and she got a clean car out of it.

Do let us know how Fix-It's party goes... :)

By Dawnk777 on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 12:25 am:

ROFL, Kate! I was laughing so hard and Emily told me, "It's not that funny!" The dog even came down to check on me!

Sometimes, it's whatever makes your child happy, even if it doesn't totally make sense!

By Mrsheidi on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 02:48 pm:

This is all just so cute!!! We're not at that stage yet, but y'all are making me look forward to it! How was Mr. Fix-It's party?

By Enchens on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 04:29 pm:

Miss Fix-It's party is this Saturday afternoon, after the little one's nap. Today, we planned it and we will be sending out invitations to GM and GP, and to their Aunt. Tomorrow, we will be making a party hat for Fix-It, since I was informed that the hats we have are too big. Wednesday, we will be making a pinata for the birthday puppy, Thursday, we will be making party favors for GM & GP. Friday we will wrap Fix-It's present. (I have no clue what to give a stuffed puppy. Any ideas? lol) At night, I will be doing things for the boys and keep them hidden until Saturday. I want ds to be as involved as possible which is why I am drawing this thing out.

By Kate on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 04:36 pm:

I have to finally ask...how did Fix-It acquire her name??

Sounds very fun and cute! Enjoy!

By Dawnk777 on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 09:40 pm:

How big is Fix-It? Would a beanie baby work? Is that too much money to spend?

Target has little finger puppets. Would that work? They aren't very expensive.

By Enchens on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - 12:00 am:

Well, a big DUH! to this mommy. When I asked ds what present we should get for Fix-It, he said, "well, a doggy bone because she's a doggy. We could make it out of my playdoh." LOL

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - 01:34 am:

LOL! There you go! He and Fix-it just have simple needs!

By Andi on Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 09:27 pm:

I would also throw the party...what fun! LOL You have to post pictures :)

By Reds9298 on Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 10:16 pm:

I would throw the party, too. We've thrown birthday parties for a few favorite stuffed animals, too. We used a Twinkie for a cake and a real candle once for a stuffed pig. Those are the best kind!LOL :)

By Dancermom on Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 10:37 pm:

This is so sweet.
