Stitches are out

Update concerning ER visit

OMG, I’m so glad that’s over with! Believe it or not, getting the stitches out was worse than when they went in. At first B was totally uncooperative. It took Dr. B, a nurse and myself to hold her down while Dr. P took them out. She was VERY, very upset, screaming, shaking and in pain. Fighting us, crying and asking to please stop. It was awful smileycrying, but if we didn’t have Dr. P do it, we would have had to go to the ER in Hartford again. NO WAY! I told her to be brave and let Dr. P do it. If she could, I would get her a new Webkinz. (The current craze.) That seemed to do the trick for her to cooperate enough to get the job done. Man, now I'm wiped out and could take a nap. Sometimes parenthood totally stinks! :(

I'm so sorry. Did it really hurt that bad? I have had stitches out and don't really remember it being that gruesome. Can she stop wearing the splint now?

By Trina~moderator on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 02:55 pm:

She can be a drama queen, but I have no doubt it was hurting. The wound still looks very raw and started bleeding again once the stitches were out. The doctor said she doesn't have to use the splint any longer, only if she feels more comfortable with it. She wouldn't let the nurse bandage it up, but asked me to do it, and she wanted the splint. I'm hoping there isn't more damage that we're not yet aware of. They took x-rays at the hospital and said there were not broken bones, so who knows?

Poor kid. It sounds like it maybe WAS uncomfortable. Will keep her in my thoughts.

{{{BIG HUGS B}}} That sounds like an awful time.:( I hope everything just gets better from here,by the sounds of it,it couldn't get any worse.

aww poor girl! I still don't understand though. You said she dropped a bowling ball on it. Was the ball sharp somehow or was there something under her hand that cut it?

I'm glad the stitchs are out and I hope it heals well.

Ouch! Hugs to you both. It is the worst when you have to hold your child down for something that is scary and paiful, but you know has to be done.
Helen sucked a google eye up her nose once and I had to hold her head, the nurse held her legs and torso and the doc went fishing while she screamed.
The google eye is now immortalized on her chart.
I hope she's feeling better.

Thanks, everyone. Now that the stitches are out I hope the healing process goes smoothly.

Bella, I wasn't there when it happened, but according to how B explained it, she slipped while holding a bolding ball. The force of the ball landing on her finger on the floor split it open along the side. This is an 8 yr. old who weighs 48 lbs. and has small, delicate fingers. I'm very surprised there were no broken bones.

{{{HUGS!!!!}}}

I feel so badly for both of you. I imagine the trauma of having stitches was too fresh in her mind, and it sounds like her finger is still really sensitive. I guess I always thought stitches came out once a wound was pretty well healed. I have never had any, so no real experience. I was just surprised to hear it bled a bit and was so very painful when they removed them today. I hope she will be feeling better soon. Hugs to both of you.

Trina, just be careful of infection since you said it was bleeding.

Poor B! I don't doubt it hurt like heck to have the stitches removed. Your hands have the most nerve endings of just about anywhere in your body (except for.......you know where.........), as I found out last year. And after having staples removed from my back following surgeries, I can tell you, it DOES hurt! Her finger is probably very sensitive right now, and doing ANYTHING on/near the cut is painful, but I can totally see how pulling the stitches out would hurt her.

Hope she gets a lot better soon, now that the worst is over with!!!!
