Math Enrichment Activites...any suggestions?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Math Enrichment Activites...any suggestions?

DS is in the 3rd grade and his teacher suggested we do some enrichment math programs at home as he is a bit bored in his regular math class. Does anyone know of any good websites or computer programs that are fun and educational??

I'm disappointed that the teacher suggested to do some math enrichment but didn't recommend any websites or workbooks. :(

Here's one I like:
Math Worksheets

It lets you customize a little bit.

I have a question, is your DS learning multiplication, division and introduction to algebra in 3rd grade? Here in MI every third grader is required to know facts through 12. I thought this a bit much and my DS is struggling through this and is getting disgusted thinking he's dumb. I was wondering how this compares to other states. I have an aunt that was a principal in OH and she thinks it's early. What is your son learning now in math?

Heidi if you see this what do you think?

3rd grade is when my kids learned multiplication and divison facts. That was the year of the timed tests. I can't remember algebra, but it seems to me, that they have always had a bit of algebra thrown in, even in elementary school.

Our third graders here have to be passed off through multiplication in order to move on to 4th grade. They start on division in 3rd, but don't have to have it passed off. Also a bit of algebra tossed into the mix. Nothing too serious though.

My ds is in 3rd grade , and they are doing multiplication facts, division, and some algebra.

Thanks for the suggestions...ds finished the mulitiplication tables...they did timed tests. They are now moving onto division...his "homeroom" teacher is not his math teacher...I've tried several times to get the math teacher to give him extra work but no luck. It was ds's homeroom teacher who suggested giving him some extra stuff to challenge him. I wil try the websites suggested.

I see all our third graders seem to be learning the same thing in math all over the country, here in Mi it's the same as Breann they have to pass all the timed tests with 100% (they can take them as many times as needed) for facts to 12 in order to proceed to 4th grade. We're down to the 6's and 7's, he's passed all the rest. Kathy I hope you didn't mind me asking others for input on your post. I wish my DS was bored in math but it's always been a struggle for him right from the beginning. I about croaked when homework came home and was algebra (3 x b = 27, b = ____). I looked in his math book last night and the next chapter is geometry. Heaven help me I never made it past Algebra I in high school. My 16 year old DS is a wiz in math and I never had to help him. I too checked the sites Heidi listed and will my DS play along too, I liked the baseball one.

Mary, it STILL surprises me how much they have to learn and at what age. Yes, it's "normal" but it boggles me how much is memorized. (Hence my belief in the Montessori way with a lot of manipulatives. It really explains what EXACTLY 4 times 5 is, IYKWIM?) So many kids don't know how to do word problems because they don't know how to APPLY mathmatics...they just regurgitate (sp?) what was taught. Some things are eventually memorized but it floors me how much they have to learn, so early, and yet still have no concept of real math and how to process real problems.
