Throwing up and rash

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Throwing up and rash
By Mrsheidi on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 08:54 am:

does one have to do with the other? somehow, during the course of the night, connor threw up. he also has had a bumpy rash on his leg for 2 days. i feel awful...i kept trying to make him eat last night and he wouldn't. mommy of the year right here...drowning in sarcasm.

i feel so sorry for him. i had to just put him in the bath tub. he even had it in his ear. ugh

By Luvn29 on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 10:43 am:

I'm at a loss here, Heidi. I know that sometimes rashes can be connected to viruses and such. Because my kids have both had rashes while running a temp or while sick. I'd put some benedryl or hydrocortisone cream on the rash, and see how he feel for awhile. Just keep an eye on him.

I was told by a doctor one time that viruses can come out as rashes...

Hope he feels better. And don't beat yourself up over trying to get him to eat. You had no idea that anything was wrong at the time, and that's our jobs as mommies!

By Tink on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 11:46 am:

Ditto Adena. With three picky eaters, I've tried to "make" each of my kids eat before realizing they were sick. If that puts you in the running for mommy of the year, you'll have plenty of company.

Plenty of viruses can show up as rashes. Is he running a fever or have any other symptoms. Quite honestly, I'd keep an eye on him but, unless another symptom shows up or the vomiting continues, I'd chalk it up to a childhood virus and just keep him hydrated. Aloe, benedryl or hydrocortisone creams could be used if the rash is itching him. Not all at once, of course. I hope he's feeling better soon.

By Kaye on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 12:26 pm:

Strep can do that. Any fever? sore throat? headache?

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 01:08 pm:

tiny fever... 99.9 on the ear thermometer. he's not eating much at all. all he ate was a little yogurt this morning.
i called the nurse hotline and she said to just keep him on plenty of liquids and call if the rash gets worse. other than that, we've been watching Thomas the Train and his Leapfrog movies all morning! poor guy...it's hard to see him sick like this. especially since it's so nice outside. i have a bit of a headache myself so we're both going to nap now... :)
thanks for all your suggestions. i will probably call a neighbor to get him some hydrocortisone cream, although it doesn't seem to bother him at all. he's had it for 2 days but, with the vomiting, i felt worried about the combination.

By Luvn29 on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 01:42 pm:

Well, even if it isn't itching, it can still help get rid of it and such, so I'd use some either way.

Also, strep does not always lead to a sore throat. My ds NEVER gets a sore throat with strep. He usually throws up once, runs a low-grade fever, and complains of his stomach hurting a lot.

I doubt Connor would let you, but if possible, it would be good to get a good flashlight and look at the back of the top of his mouth, near the throat, and in the back of his throat for red or white splotches there. Usually a sign of strep. Maybe you can make a game out of it or something... Let him look at you first, and then it's your turn...

I'd keep an eye on him and play it by ear today...

By Nicki on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 02:53 pm:

Poor Connor. I hope you are both feeling better very soon.
Lara just got over a bout of tummy flu. I did the same thing, Heidi. Encouraged her to eat that evening and she was sick later.:-( I know how you feel. So you are not alone!
Hugs to you and Connor.

Thanks you guys...he threw up again. This time he threw up his Advil. He woke up from his nap with 102 temperature and so I have him some liquid Advil and he projectile vomited over and over. ugh.

He attempting to eat some graham crackers, so I hope that helps. He's drinking liquids but I have to keep an eye on his diaper output IYKWIM.

Poor guy...it's was so gorgeous outside and we had 3 moms who wanted to go to the playground with us!!! Our phone has been ringing off the hook!
Ah well...

By Emily7 on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 05:43 pm:

I can't remember which mom on the board recommends it, but blueberry yorgurts helps stop the vomiting.
I hope he gets to feeling better, poor thing must be miserable between the vomiting & the fever.

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 08:22 pm:

well, he threw up for the 3rd time tonight at 7pm ...this time he really did toss his cookies (3 graham crackers). so, not much else is going down that chute until he can keep something down. it's hard because i had to eat something tonight since I forgot to eat lunch and so he sees me eat and he *wants* to eat but he shouldn't. try explaining that to a toddler! ugh. i have water on stand by but that's it. i've never washed his blankees so many times in one day! he had a fever at around 4pm but he seemed ok after i finally got some advil down him and it stayed down. poor guy...he just wants to be normal again! his temp was fine at 7:30 so i'm going to even steer clear of even fever reducers in his belly.

i just put him down at 8pm and i prepared his bed with a sheet, then a waterproof mattress protector, and then another sheet under it. i have the thermometer, tylenol, washcloths, the nurse hotline, and towels on standby...thank the lord for monitors! i'm going to have it on all night.

after all is said and done, i'm loving my duty as a "comforter". he looked so miserable this last time because he got it all over himself. i stripped his clothes, cleaned off his face and hand and just said "it's ok, honey" and then right afterwards he gave me this huge hug and said "mmmmaaaaahhhmmmmeeee" in the sweetest tone EVER. I never thought i would grin ear to ear in vomit.

By Luvn29 on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 09:13 pm:

Bless his little heart. Sounds like he has one of those nasty stomach viruses. Hopefully it will pass in the night, and he'll wake up tomorrow morning feeling much better...

They can sure steal your heart away with moments like that, can't they. God must make them extra sweet in trying times so that we still can't resist them!

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 12:05 am:

Poor Connor. Hope he is feeling better soon.

By Bellajoe on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:31 am:

The nurse told me once that drinking water induces vomiting (when your sick) so don't give him water. Stuff like gaterade or ginger ale would work better. Also good foods to give him while sick are Banana Applesauce and Toast, B A T is how i remember that.

My ds woke up and threw up at 1 a.m. last night. but he was walking down the hall to tell us that he felt like he was going to throw up so it was ALL DOWN THE HALLWAY, and splashed up onto the woodwork and walls EEEEWW! Luckily it's a tile hallway so we just had to mop it up. He even got some on my new carpeting, but i used SPOT SHOT and i think it cleaned up pretty good. It really stunk and was nasty. But he seems o.k. this morning. He says his tummy still hurts though.

I hope your little pumpkin feels better soon. It's so sad when they are so little and sick :( poor baby.

By Heaventree on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 01:44 pm:

Heidi,

How's Connor today. Poor little poochie man!

Hugs to you both!

By Reds9298 on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:24 pm:

Oh dear...I hope he's feeling better soon. It's awful to see your baby so sick. I've heard the same thing about water as Bellajoe. We used Pedialyte when Natalie had the stomach bug, in small doses. I think they told me maybe a tsp at a time until we worked up to more and she could keep it down. I'd have to check because I know I wrote that down and kept it for future reference.

((Hugs)) to both of you!

By Mrsheidi on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 10:46 pm:

Thanks you guys. He had diarrhea all day. More laundry, more stinky, and poor guy just wants to watch tv all day. I don't have pedialyte and I can't go to the store...being hubby-less sucks.

I'm going to the store on Tuesday and I'm just going to have some in case he likes it now. He used to refuse the stuff. :(

By Jjb on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 10:46 pm:

I'm so sorry he's so miserable. Try to only give him Tylenol and avoid Advil. I learned this after several boughts of the stomach bug with my kids. The Advil hurts their stomachs and has actually caused my DS to throw up.

You might want to check inside his mouth to see if it looks like strep- my DS had what I thought was a stomach bug and it turned out to be strep with vomiting. He didn't really feel the sore throat since his stomach bothered him so much. Good luck! Hang in there.

By Kaye on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 02:15 am:

big yuck...being hubbyless does suck!

if you have it, give him a few bites of blueberry yougart. It has amazing antinausea effects.

By Debbie on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 10:34 am:

I hope he feels better soon. It is so hard when they are this age, and get sick like that. And, being hubbyless doesn't help at all.

By Bellajoe on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 03:22 pm:

Heidi, do you have a nice neighbor you could call? If that neighbor happens to being going to the store soon, maybe you could ask her to pick up some pedialyte for you? Just a thought.

I feel for ya hon. Having your hubby away does suck! :(
I wish we all lived closer so we could help ya out!

By Mrsheidi on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 08:33 pm:

Thanks you guys...at this point, I just can't wait for Scott to come home!!
