What should I do?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: What should I do?
By Christylee on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 - 09:51 am:

Hey ladies, I'll get on and update this evening but had to come to you guys with a question about my B. I need some opinions here, I'm at a loss... HELP! TIA

Okay, took Brendan to the doctor on last Wednesday for pink eye and also what ended up being an URI and infected throat. He's been on antibotics since last Wednesday evening and he's STILL running fever unless you keep the motrin and tylenol in him. With his history of ear infections, sore throats, and now saying his stomach hurts I'm really getting concerned.

Part of me wants to go pick him up and go sit down at Texas Children's and see what they say, the last doctor's visit was that $18 clinic. I'm tired of the circles under his eyes, tired of him not feeling well, tired of him not running constant fever.

So should I go take him down to Texas Children's and see what kind of help I can get, take him back to Dr Patel, or call the ENT and see if I can get him in and go from there. I'm just tired of him not feeling well and not feeling 100% like a little boy should.

Where do I go from here, what would you do?

I would take him in for a complete check-up, including a full blood work up. Does anything else on his body hurt?
I hope he feels better quickly!

Go back to the pediatrician or the ENT. His tummy is probably hurting from all of the Tylenol/Motrin. If he is on antibiotics he should be feeling much better.

Ditto on going back to the doctor. It's been long enough, that the antibiotics should have had some effect!

First off...he is on antibiotics for a viral infection. Unless they ran a strep test those antibiotics won't really do him any good. Second, he should be doing better by day 6, with or without antibiotics. I would just make a ped appointment and take him back in. Say he is still sick, what do we do. An ENT won't see him for several weeks, you could go to the the er at children's, but really it isn't an emergency. I would be prepared to ask your doc, when do I need to worry about him being so sick so often, should we go see a specialist, etc.

Also if he does have strep and isn't on the right med, it could just be getting worse, which causes tummy aches too. But defintely motrin will cause tummy issues!

Thank you everyone, we've got an 3:00 appointment with his doctor and I've already contacted the ENT about what I need for that appointment. She said once I have the referral they can get him in next week!

I'll be sure and post after the doctor's appointment this evening.

Being on an antibiotic doesn't mean you will be healed. There are so many different antibiotics because there are so many bugs out there. If the doctor does a culture of the infected area, it takes 2 to 4 days to get the results back as to what the bug actually is and what antibiotic is susceptible to that bug. Most of the time docs will prescribe antibiotics based on their knowledge of what the most prevalent bug related to a set of symptoms and spare the patient the time and expense of a culture. What he has may not be the usual or most prevalent bug going around and that antibiotic may not be the one he needs. Without a culture and sensitivity, it is just a guessing game.

Thanks guys, his doctor switched his antibotics and as of last night fever was gone for the most part and feeling a little better than he has in a while.

I'm glad I took him back in, now these yuckies need to stay away!

Hope this one works better!
