Holiday overstimulation anyone?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Holiday overstimulation anyone?
By Nicki on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 06:53 pm:

Okay, I know the little ones can get easily over stimulated this time of year. My Lara, age four, has gone from happy dancing to crashing and crying within a fifteen minute period on any given day since the tree has gone up! Can anyone else relate? I love the holidays, but find myself really down playing the whole scene this year. My dd is highly sensitive to everything, so all the Christmas excitement has been a challenge. I am learning to take deep breaths and follow her lead. I am avoiding taking Lara to any stores right now. We are taking a break from seeing Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (for ever):-). And I am even keeping the T.V. and holiday music still for awhile. (I think I have been a SAHM too long. I want quiet! lol.) And to make matters even more interesting, it has been raining here for six days straight.

Just wondered if anyone else is going through the same this season. I love Christmas, but I am actually going to sigh in relief on the 26th.:-)

I haven't really noticed it too much with my dks. They are older than Lara but some kids are just more prone to this kind of overstimulation. I'm surprised that my ds is doing so well with his sensory issues. They've had a few later than normal nights with holiday celebrations and I do notice that they are more emotional the next day but I think that's just being tired.

It sounds like you're doing everything you can to minimize the stimuli that Lara's exposed to and you only have eleven more days to get through!:)

The kindergarteners at the school where I work, all seem pretty wound up! It's hard to keep them quiet in the hall.

DD will be 6 in January. She is so excited about Christmas and is normally a happy kid. But since Thanksgiving, it seems like everything hurts her feelings and she is in tears at the drop of a hat. I was sort of thinking about the holiday overload thing myself. And we have been so busy. Tonight has been the first night in quite awhile that either somebody has not been here or we've not been out for something or another.

Debbie, Lara has been been very emotional as well. Turns out she was coming down with a cold on top of everything else. I hope your dd is doing better.:-)
Tink, glad to hear your ds is doing great. I think Lara may have some sensory issues, as well. It's a bit of a learning adventure for both Lara and me! But, I think I'm starting to understand her better. Thanks for the encouragement!

Christmas is my most favorite time of year. But, my kids have been terrible this year :( It really has put a damper on things. They aren't listening, they are always arguing and whining. I've about had enough!
I'm hoping to get things under control by the weekend so that we can all enjoy the actual holiday :)

*by "this year", I mean this holiday season.
