Will he ever go poop on the potty?????

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Will he ever go poop on the potty?????
By Stace on Sunday, October 15, 2006 - 08:25 pm:

Hello! My ds Evan is 3 1/2, just the past 2 months or so he finally got down, going pee on the potty. WHA WHOO!! However, he refuses to go poop on the potty. When he needs to go, he asks me to put a pull up on him and he will go into another room and do his duty. Now, he has gone one time a few weeks ago for his dad, but he thinks that he went and that's it. He say's he can't try again. I have tried EVERYTHING, at least I think I have. Thats why I am writing, to see if any of you have had similar situations and what you did about it. I know I need to be patient and he will do it when he is ready. I really am just curious to see what you have done in the past with your children.

What happens if you don't put the pull-up on him? The first thing I would do is "throw" those things away...one can magically appear at bedtime if you need it. I have just noticed that they slow the whole process down a bit. Get him some underwear he loves and he will not want to make a mess of them.

I also sat my boys backwards on the potty, my 3 year old still sits backward. Mine didn't have the fear of falling in like that. The other thing I noticed with one of mine was that he didn't like to go because I would sit on the tub and wait...he needed me out of the room, so I would leave the door cracked and tell him I was sitting right by the door and for him to yell for me when he was ready. Make sure when he goes you make a HUGE deal of it.

DD never liked the little potty chairs. Not sure why. But she started going on the potty when we got a ring for the bathroom potty. She saw it at Home Depot when she was with her daddy getting something and he bought it for her. The outside diameter is bigger than the regular seat hole. The inner diameter is smaller so she feels safe on it. It's cushiony and has ladybugs on it. It just sits on the regular ring, no fancy installation and just lift it off. I've seen them with other characters and decor on them. But since it was her idea, she was ready. She was just past her 3rd birthday. Maybe something like that would help.

He does not wear pull-ups at all during the day. I only put a pull up on him at bedtime. He doesn't even wear them anymore during naptime. However, when he has to go...he does ask for one. He will not go in school so he does not ask for one there. If I didn't put one on him, he would go in his underwear. He has a ton of underwear that he likes and that he picked out. For the most part, that is all he wears with the exception of bedtime. I have made a huge deal when I found out he went at his dad's house and so did his dad. We have tried numerous rewards and so on and so on. He does not like the little potty's...I have two of them. Never tried sitting him backwards tho...hmmm...that's a thought!

Boy, have I been there!!!! It took my DD until maybe five months ago to get the poopy part down (and she's 4 1/2).

My advise is that, if he has no problem going (meaning constipation or withholding), then definitely get rid of the pull-ups. You have the advantage over me, where your son actually tells you when he wants the pull-up. My DD just did it! So, when he asks for the pull-up, just say "You're a big boy. Let's go and do it together!" and go with him and talk to him, or keep books in the bathroom to comfort him! It's going to take awhile, but, he'll come around!

Good luck!
