Ok, so he won't talk much but he'll recognize letters?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Ok, so he won't talk much but he'll recognize letters?
By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 - 12:01 am:

Connor has about 27 words that he says, and some without the need for prompting. Yet, I've shown him some letters and he starts pointing them out and saying them?

It just seems so backwards to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited that he's doing it, but I get weird looks from my friends about it.

He pointed to the "B" "i" and "r" and said the letters while he saw the title "Big Red Car" on his Wiggles DVD.
He also points out letters like crazy now while we're on the road or at the gym.
His favorite is "O" and likes to draw it on his aquadoodle while saying "OOOHHHHH". He's even attempted an "e" on his own.

This kid has me scratching my head!!! :) I wonder if it's because the single sounds are EASIER to say?

You've got me BUT to me that's wonderful that he is so bright to have already picked it up! Brendan is 5 and about to start kindergarten and still has a hard time with some of them.

Way to go Connor AND mommy!

Way to go Connor! That is great that he is learing his letters and the sounds they make. It will definitley help him when it is time to start reading.

My oldest ds talked late. I was so worried about him. But, soon after he turned 2, his speech went from a few words to sentences. It seemed like it happened overnight. However, he still didn't talk a lot. He was reading at 4, knew all his letters early, etc. He is now 8, and still doesn't talk much, we have come to accept that it is his personality. He is not shy, and it drives me crazy when people say it. He is just one of those people that only talks when he has something important to say. He is going into 4th grade, but is reading at a 6th grade level, does excellant in math. He is just not a talker. LOL. I am lucky because my youngest is a chatter box, and talking all the time. 2 of them would drive me crazy.

Heidi,
Randy was a late talker, but late talking does not have anything to do with IQ. At 24 months, Randy knew all his letters and shapes and numbers just by pointing. He knew so much, but just couldn't say it yet. Now, he uses words that floor me and is just such a good little conversationalist.

Some kids learn their letters very early and others much later. Helen at 16 months recognized all her letters and could say the sounds for most of them.

Keep up the good work!

Ame

Heidi I think that's great that he recognizes his letters. Way to go Connor!

Matthew has a short attention span so we stopped books at night and have been doing flash cards instead it's really helping with recongnition, I bought 3 packs of cards and he knows all the cards and can say almost everyone. They have the corresponding letter on the back of each card.

He also loves to look at the grocery flyers, we call it "reading the paper". I can't believe sometimes how many things he recognizes. It's really helping to expand his vocabulary.

He can say some of his letters and numbers and recognizes some as well, but we really need to start working a bit more on these.

Oh forgot to mention, I bought some laminated placemats at Walmart yesterday with brightly coloured numbers and letters. Bought one on solar system, the world, a map of Canada and one for colours, both Matthew and Cameron love them.

That's really great! Hard to understand what they choose to learn sometimes. Natalie recognizes the colors orange, black, and pink which are the LAST colors I thought she would learn. She knows about 4 numbers and she identifies numbers vs. letters which REALLY floors me. I had plenty of K's that couldn't do that!

Thanks, everyone! It floors me how much he's absorbing now!
My cousin's child didn't know his alphabet when he entered Kindergarten and he felt so behind. All the other kids knew how to spell his name on the computer and he just sat there and cried.
I didn't think Connor was actually absorbing what I was saying...makes me realize that I am really responsible for what he learns. I also feel like I'm getting to know his personality a little more. I think it's so neat! :)

Heidi - my son is very similar to Connor. He was and is crazy about letters and numbers. He knew his entire alphabet and sounds around 18 mths. He is three now and recognizes and spells more words than his brother, who will be 7 in the fall. He doesn't hold the pencil correctly and so has difficulty writing but loves reading. He's pretty proficient on the computer and obviously very bright; HOWEVER, he doesn't speak very well. Certainly not as well as his older brother did at his age. My older ds is just not interested in books and letters etc. I believe he's just as bright as my three year old but it's his level of interest - exposure - which causes him to not know as much. My three year old on the other hand sleeps with a book under his arm. Kids are just so different. I agree it is so neat to watch your kids absorb things. More power to you and Connor!
