Help Finding a Product!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Help Finding a Product!
By Angellew on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 11:05 am:

I'm still having a terrible time with my DD witholding her BMs since we have potty trained. Twice a week is a good week. But more so, she's holding it for up to seven days. It's a vicious cycle... it hurts to go, so she holds it, and the longer she holds it, the drier and harder it gets, so it hurts!!!! I've tried fiber, prune juice, which is like pulling teeth to get her to drink it! I've been searching the internet and there is a product called "Juice Plus Fibre"... it's juice boxes that are suppose to be fantastic for this!!! But, I can only seem to find them on the internet! Seems crazy to be ordering juice on the internet and paying s&h, but... if necessary.

Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of it or knows where to get it, especially in NE area!

TIA

I've not heard of these juice boxes, but have you heard of Benefiber? It's nicer than Metamucil and you can mix it in her regular juice. It dissolves well and has no taste or grit.

You can almost always special order anything through your regular pharmacy. They might not carry it due to lack of demand, but would get it in for you. They will probably want you to buy a case though, to make it worth their while.

I would strongly urge you to take her to your pediatrician. I don't want to scare you, but my oldest ds went through this when potty training. It took a very longggg time for him to get past it. His pediatrician ended up giving us Miralax. It is a nonstimulating stool softner. It is a colorless/ordorless powder that you can just mix with juice. My ds took this daily for several months, then we slowly weened him off of it. I want to say that it took almost a year for him to regain normal bm's, and for me to stop monitoring him. I wish I had taken him to the doctor when it first started. But, I waited several months and tried to handle it myself. I think that is the reason it took so long for him to get over it. The quicker you get her on the right medication to fix it, the better.

Also, I wanted to add, that if she has been holding it for awhile. Even though she is going, she could still have old stool backed up in her intestines. Her doctor can check for this and make sure she is clear. If not, he can give you a course of treatment to clean her out.

I have an order form for the juice plus fiber if you are interested.

I have found that Mirilax or Kondremul (which is OTC and tastes yummy when cold) work very well.

You can also just get some Benefiber and make your own fiber juice.

Good luck!

My heart goes out to you. My poor DD went thru this from age 2 yrs to 4 yrs...non stop. It was just awful. We did everything. Although they were awful, enemas were done w/ her on more than one occasion and she felt so much better afterwards. But it was awful.

Not sure why, but after she had her tonsils out the problem went away immediately.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help. I just know how you are feeling.

I know how frustrated you must feel. Do you know why she won't have a BM on the potty? My oldest DD went through this stage as well with potty training. She didn't want to have a BM on the potty because she couldn't tolerate the smell and would withold her BMs. When she would get constipated I used otc stool softeners and she would drink prune juice. I used to bribe my daughter with a treat bag (filled with dollar store finds, stickers, small treats, etc). Everytime she would have a BM on the potty she was allowed to pick a wrapped gift from the treat bag. It worked like a charm. I hope it gets easier for you.

I agree with Debbie - I think this is an issue for your pediatrician, and if the pediatrician doesn't take it seriously I think you should push hard.

Thank you all!

I did speak with the pediatrician yesterday and, because this only started with potty training, he would really like to "try" to get her to do it herself! So, he suggested the Benefiber and Flaxseed Oil every day. Especially now with the summer here, she's so active and eats soooo much fruit that, hopefully, this will do it. But, if not, they'll bump her up to the Mirilax.

I never thought I could be so all consumed with poop!!! My waking thought is "Did she poop?" and all day it's "Do you have to go poopy?" So, I'm not going to push her so much toward the potty either! Maybe it's me! I can be pushy, I'm told!

I'm trying to solve this problem in my dreams, Angellew, so you are not alone! Our dd is going through much the same. I feel so bad for her. Thank you for starting this thread. As always, some very good suggestions! Hope things better for you and your little one.

You should definitely check out serious constipation issues with your doctor. If he/she says your child needs more fiber, then Juice Plus Fibre really is a great product. A juice box contains 10 grams of fiber, while a glass of prune juice contains less than 3 grams of fiber.

You can find out more about Juice Plus Fibre at www.givemefiberjuice.com
