I can't find a picture of it, but I had something that was flannel on one side and vinyl or something like it, on the other side. It was very thin. I laid it between the mattress pad and the bottom sheet.

I use a vinyl 'bag' purchased for less than $10 at Linens 'n Things. It's just a huge vinyl twin sized mattress shaped bag with a zipper and countoured sides and such. Then I use a quality mattress pad over it. I much prefer it to buying expensive vinyl coated mattress pads and it keeps the dust mites out, too. And it encases the entire mattress, not just the top.

I'm with Kate. I would definitely put a mattress pad over the vinyl, for the comfort, but then you can wash the padded mattress pad whenever you want without having to wrestle with the mattress.

I actually bought a cloth-backed vinyl table cloth, and use that, cloth side up for their mattresses. If they get wet just strip off with the sheets and throw it in the wash.

One of the things I started doing with my middle son who was having lot of night time accidents. I would make the bed with a mattress pad, shower curtain, sheet, shower curtain and then sheet again. This way in the middle of the night I could strip off the top layer and not have to remake the bed..lol.

I did not like the mattress pads that had vinyl on them, too hard to wash and it peels off. Also I did just let him sleep on a sheet right ontop of the vinyl shower curtain. He never complained. I kind of looked at it this way, kid will sleep anywhere, the floor, the car seat. On my baby mattress i didn't have a pillow top their either, just the vinyl cover and a sheet, so it just made sense to keep it the same.
