Upset Stomach ?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Upset Stomach ?
By Mazoku85 on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 - 02:40 pm:

My son Avery woke up last Thursday (03/02/06)and I fed him some oatmeal with brown sugar for breakfast. At lunch I was going to give him a gerber grads dinner becasue I didn't feel like making him lunch. He threw all of it up, then continued to play. Later that night he threw up 9 or 10 more times and did not eat any dinner, but was drinking gatoraide.

Friday was not any better, he threw up once but was still feeling bla and wouldn't eat so I made sure he had his fluids, and I made him a bed on the couch so he could be in the living room with me and that is where he stayed for the whole day...so he didn't go to pre-school. I called his doctor and she said just give him fluids, like Gaotraide or Koolaide and if he doesn't vomit anymore resume feeding him on Saturday.

Saturday, he acted fine so I fed him breafast and he threw all of it up...twice! I cleaned him up and gave him some koolaide, he drank it all to fast and threw it up. So after cleaning him up..again. I made him his little bed on the couch ad he camped out there and thew up once more.. Then was playing and acting normal, but still would not eat anything, plus he had light diarihea. (hope I spelled that right).

Monday,I fed him scrambled eggs with cheese and applesause for breakfast. He ate it and wanted more, so I gave him some cheerios to pick up and eat. And he was drinking tea. He looked like he felt good, but he would not eat anythingfor lunch. So, I took him to pre-school..his teacher told me he did good, he would play or participate with them for about 15 to 20 minutes then want to be held or would lay down in the floor.
When I brought him home to feed him dinner (which was pasta salad with tuna, carrots, and peas. He threw up all over his high chair before he even ate anything. And did not eat anything the rest of the night, only drank fluids.

Today, my husband fed him bluberry instant oatmeal(instant oatmeal is his favorite thing to eat.) he ate that, but does not want any lunch, and I don't know if he will eat dinner. I don't know what to do. Avery is already a picky eater, but it seams all he wants is breafast. What should I do ?

He goes through out each day laying about on the floor, but he gets up at times to play. I don't know if an upset stomach lasts this long, does it ?

Well, for one, I would be calling the doctor. Usually, stomach bugs don't hang around that long. At least IMO. Second, I would totally change him over to the brat diet. Very bland food. Bananas, rice, applesauce and dry toast. I would also give him pedialite to drink. I would keep him on that until the vomiting and diarhea completely stops.

It very well could be that he has a stomach virus or the flu. I would stop giving him kool-aid and gatorade. I know your doctor suggested it, but kool-aid has lots of sugar. Also, gatorade is not good for little dks. My youngest ds has reflux and his GI doctor told me that he can not have this. She said it is really not good for children in general because it has a lot of acid that is not good for their stomachs. I would suggest giving your ds water and pedialyte. Also, stick to very plain foods such a dry cherios, dry toast, chicken brooth, crackers, etc. If it doesn't clear up in a few days, they I would call his doctor.

We got him some pedialyte Saturday, he's been drinking it off and on. Iam going to call his doctor...if I can ever get through.

Can someone make a lunch suggestion. Another thing,Avery does not eat loaf bread like toast or pancakes. He has a problem with texture.

I'd keep him on the BRAT diet until he stops throwing up.

Im sorry your little one is sick, its so horrible when they are. 4 outta 5 of mine were just sick with the flu. My 16 month old was the one I worried about the most , I kept him on the brat diet , but after a day with vomiting I gave him some chicken noodle soup. I put it in one of those bowls with a built in straw and he sipped the broth. He seemed to like that. Good Luck.

I took him to the doctor and he said Avery was dehidrated, so he stayed in the hospital last night with an IV in his arm. He got to go home because he was drinking enough and took a few bites of mashed potato and ate some gram crakcers.

I am still woried about Avery's eating habbits, even when he's healthy, he always has had a problem with texture. For example, he won't eat bread, this goes for toast, muffins, pancakes burgers/sandwhiches. He also won't eat hardly any meat at all, he may eat a chicken nugget/strip if I break it up for him.

He is a very hard child to please when it comes to food. Its worse that he can't talk and tell me what he would like or that he can't understand what he's eating. Sometimes he acts like he don't even know what food is. It also sucks for me because I can't cook very well and Avery hardly eats anything I make. Its driving me crazy, I don't know what to do. He mainly eats scrambled eggs, apple sause (various fruit flavors), oatmeal (various flavors), cheerios, yogurt, gerber graduates dinners, fries, chicken nuggets (sometimes), mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, some fish,cookies/crackers. Is this okay ?

What about trying to add some veggies into his eggs or mashed potatoes. Mash up some carrots or turnip and add just a little bit to his mashed potatoes, add a little more each time. Buy some sweet potatoes, kids usually like those as well.

You can also add some cauliflower to his eggs, steam it and mash it then add it to the eggs.

It's great that he likes fish, it's a good source of protien. If he's eating chicken nuggets just check the sodium level on the package sometimes they are really high in salt, not good if he's dehydrated. You can easily make your own. Just buy some bread crumbs and boneless skinless chicken breasts. Cut up the chicken, dip in a egg mixture and then the bread crumbs and pop them in the oven.

I don't know what gerber dinners are, you just have to watch sometimes prepared packaged foods have a lot of fat, salt or sugar added so read your labels.

How much milk is he drinking each day?

I know it's tough when they don't eat, sometimes you have to get a little creative. You could also try making some smoothies. I make one for Matthew every morning.

4 frozen strawberries or some blueberries
1/2 banana
1 tbsp of plain yogurt
1 cup of whole milk
1 tsp of wheat germ
1 tsp of flaxseed oil
Mix up in a blender.

You could also go to the library and get some children's cookbooks, sometimes presentation goes a long way.

Hope that helps a bit. My doctor always says "No child in the history of the world has ever starved themselves to death".

Hang in there you're a good mommy for wanting your child to eat well and make healthy choices.

Thanks Heaven Tree, I actually do make Avery and myself berry smoothies,

1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup frozen raspberries
1/2 cup milk
1 cup yogurt (full or non fat)

He loves them. He has no problem eating fruit which I'm greatful for.

He doesn't drink much milk at all, so I give him
Pediasure in Chocolate and Vanilla. He also drinks chocolate milk but not everyday.

He simply does not like milk by itself becasue he does not like the taste. So I try to work around it by giving him yogurt/ice cream/pediasure/milk shakes and it wors pretty well, plus his oatmeal is made with milk.
He probably gets somewhere around 16 oz of milk a day.
