Do they all jump on the bed?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Do they all jump on the bed?
By Heaventree on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 03:44 pm:

Is it instinct or what? We bought a new mattress for Matthew a week ago. We put it in the middle of the living room floor and took the plastic off. It's been sitting there all week because I wanted it to air out a bit before putting it in his room. Just wanted to make sure any chemicals from manufacturing had time to dissapate as it was wrapped in plastic.

Matthew cannot resist jumping on the matteress every time he is in the living room.

Do your kids jump on the bed?

By Trina~moderator on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 03:57 pm:

Yes, I think it is a natural instinct! LOL! My kids (7 & 9) used to jump on their beds when they were younger. At 3, DS fell off and hit his cheek bone on his nightstand. :( A hard lesson learned, because he hasn't jumped on his bed since.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 04:01 pm:

Kaitlyn briefly did but i'm a mean Mom and she gets in trouble for it. :) I think it's instinct.

By Kate on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 04:13 pm:

Um, yes. That was an easy one. :)

By Vicki on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 05:41 pm:

I guess we are the strange ones.... dd has never been one to jump on her bed. I can honestly say I don't ever remember her doing it at all!!

My grandma had 3 queen size beds in her basement when we were growing up and all of us grandkids would sleep down there. We would flip from bed to bed. lol :)

My kids all jumped on the bed. They dont anymore.

By Sunny on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 06:11 pm:

Didn't you jump on the bed when you were little? I know I did! LOL

My kids know not to do it at our home or anyone else's, but hotels are a different story.

By Heaventree on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 06:45 pm:

Yeah Sunny I jumped on the bed as well, but I almost lost an eye doing it. I fell and hit the edge of my eye socket on the head board. Now I have a little scar to remind me, but it just like a wrinkle now. :)

Guilty guilty guilty! My sisters and I LOVED jumping on the beds. If we were left alone, we did it, but then had to make the beds quick, if mom and dad came home, so we wouldn't be caught.

My children jumped on beds, too. When Sarah was little, she would jump up, land on her butt and kind of bounce off the bed! It was fun watching her do that!

By Kaye on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 08:14 pm:

Yes. I reprimand very quickly, but they still do it. My youngest will just outright in front of me jump on MY bed...uh hello (and we do have a trampoline..lol). The bigger two don't, EXCEPT on vacation if they have their own bedroom I have caught them. Drives me CRAZY.

When we were stationed in Okinawa, one of our dd's was three. I caught her jumping on the bed. I didn't get mad, just told her not to do it anymore.
Well, after dinner, we were all sitting around the livingroom playing and I told dd she could show dh how she was jumping on the bed;, by jumping on the couch.
Two seconds later she hit the top of her forehead on the edge of the coffee-table, requiring six stitches!

By Pamt on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 08:48 pm:

I'm sure I did and my kids did, but only once or twice. It's never been an issue or anything. They do like jumping across the beds at a hotel though. :)

By Pamt on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 08:50 pm:

BTW, my kids love(d) the book "No Jumping on the Bed" by Tedd Arnold...and I must admit that I love it too! It's about a boy who jumps on his bed and then crashes through several stories of his apartment building landing in an aquarium, a spaghetti dinner, a stamp collection, etc. Recommended reading for bed jumpers! :)

My kids don't jump on their beds (bunk beds) or our bed but we drag the double mattress from one of the bottom bunks out to the living room just so they can jump on it! :) They know that's the only time it's allowed and they have a blast.

When I was a kid if I jumped ont the bed and messed it up, I got fussed at. Ruined the fun. My mom was always ruining the fun like that.

So the kids when little and wouldn't destroy the bed by jumping on it have been allowed. As they got bigger, it was banned due to the pssibility of destroying furniture. Once I caught dd flying off my headboard onto our king sized bed like someone sky diving. I told her that repeating that action would find her banned from jumping on the bed altogether. Scared the life right out of me.

Be careful. My friend's son was jumping on a mattress on the floor when he was 2. He fell off and landed funky. Completely broke his arm. I mean a real break, his bone was sticking out :(

So my kids don't jump on their beds anyomore, if they do, i just remind them about their friend and his broken arm...then they stop.

By Conni on Friday, January 20, 2006 - 06:16 pm:

My neice broke her arm jumping on the bed.

My 14 year old still likes jumping on the bed! LOL! I caught him jumping on the sofa bed today :)

*knocks on wood* so far none of them have been seriously hurt doing it and I even jump on the bed with them sometimes :)

By Rayanne on Saturday, January 28, 2006 - 08:28 am:

Rylee loves to jump on her bed.:)
I used to love it too, but was never allowed to.:(

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 10:48 am:

In a word...........YES. LOL Though that does not mean you have to allow it.

It's dangerous, we know that, but kids would never think of that.

Decide where you stand on this/what your rules and consequences are, and stick to them.

By Kim on Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 04:14 pm:

LOL, mine still jump on the bed too. Its always MY bed. Its not worth raising my blood pressure over UNLESS they do not remake the bed when they are done.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 06:36 pm:

My parents were more worried about us wrecking a mattress than anyone getting hurt. Nobody ever got hurt, but we weren't supposed to do it. Doesn't mean we didn't try to get away with it, anyway!
