5th Grade Math Helps

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: 5th Grade Math Helps
By Northcountrymom on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 - 11:57 am:

Need 5th grade math help for a boy? Last year ruined math for my 5th grade guy. A child who used to love math fun won't do anything without resistance. Loves cars. Loves racing bikes/motorcycles. Still loves pokemon.

Oh, no! Poor little guy. Is it math in general or specific things in math?

Have you considered a tutor or one of those tutoring places like Sylvan? I don't how they work, personally, so I couldn't really say. I also don't know how much they cost. Does the school have any suggestions or did you decide to homeschool after all?

Saw your other post but to answer the math issue - hard to know what is the actual problem. We will probably use Sylvan as part of our year. In the meantime we're keeping math have-to's to a minimum. My husband has been using a math games book as a complement to my more traditional approach. More will be revealed - I do love having a hands on/play by play opportunity to adjust course.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think I would go alittle easy on the math since he is turned off with it.

I am sure you can find some hot wheel math projects to do if you search the web.

I don't know if that is going to be too baby for him.

Multipation and division and math stories.

I don't know about that. It is $2 a week.

Feona,
Mathletics looks promising but the hot wheels idea is inspired He'll love it.

Thanks,
Linda

I know but what to do?

By Northcountrymom on Saturday, October 3, 2009 - 05:05 pm:

We're coming at this head on (workbooks etc.). But Dad is also playing lots of math games. They even invented one. Also software wherever I go with a computer. Math on-line. I am also starting over a grade back with really simple math hoping to make the transition to Singapore Math.
