Fever blister?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Fever blister?
By Tink on Friday, January 6, 2006 - 12:58 pm:

Does anyone know anything about these? My oldest DD has a blister under her tongue and now on the inside of her lip, right against her teeth. She says they aren't very painful but she's very "aware" of them. She had a fever (101) about five days ago, along with a cough, but the blisters didn't show up until last night. She has no other symptoms but these and they look exactly like a blister you'd get anywhere else (clear fluid-filled bubble of skin) except that they are in her mouth. I thought fever blisters were on the outside of someone's mouth and looked more like a cold sore. I've never had a cold sore or fever blister so I'm really not sure what I'm looking at. I already called the pediatrician and should be getting a call back from the nurse soon, I hope. TIA :)

My oldest ds sometimes gets these after he has been sick. They usually show up a few days afterwards. We have always left them alone and they go away in a few days.

Fever Blisters are viral, and on the outside, while canker sores are on the inside. Jules and Jen used to get canker sores when they had strep. Has your DD been strep-tested? Jules had them a lot when she had braces and was prescribed a liquid antibiotic to swish around in her mouth.

It could also be hand, foot and mouth disease, where a high fever is usually present.

I know what canker sores are. I get them frequently but these aren't white or yellow and aren't ulcerous. They are inside her mouth and aren't in a group. These blisters seem to be a combination of canker sores (inside her mouth and in singles) and fever blisters (small blisters rather than the ulcer type sore). I don't know where she would have been exposed to the herpes virus for the fever blisters. No one on either side of our family gets them and I don't *think* she's been kissing anyone else! :) We've done the HF&M disease and I'm 99% sure that this isn't it. I had her swish with some Mylanta to neutralize any acids and I'm still waiting for a call back from the ped's office. Thanks for the link, Karen.

I get these a lot. They just pop up all of a sudden. She is exactly right... mine never really hurt, I'm just aware they are there. Mine usually pop (with my help....shhhh!) and then they are gone and you can't feel them anymore. But it is painful to pop them and I do not recommend that at all! They go away within a couple of days usually, anyhow.
