When did you go to a "toddler" bed?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2005: When did you go to a "toddler" bed?
By Mrsheidi on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 10:44 pm:

I just want a "heads up" so I know when to put him in a toddler bed situation with bed rails one day.
He's not trying to climb out yet, but I'm just curious?

By Kaye on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 10:50 pm:

With my dd at about 18 months, she hated it and wouldn't stay in it, by age 2 she was in a full sized bed.

My my middle son, we went straight to the twin bed at almost 2.

With my youngest at about 3 he went to a toddler bed and stayed in it until about 4 1/2.

The point, each kid is different :)

By Boxzgrl on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 11:21 pm:

Between 18-20 months. She wasn't climbing out but it was nice for her to come to me in the morning instead of me getting up. 5 minutes of extra sleep is great, lol.

By Tink on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 11:29 pm:

I just waited until my dks started trying to climb out of the crib. For my two oldest, that was just after 2 years old. We finally moved my youngest when she was three and a half since she would have stayed in the crib as long as she fit.

By Emily7 on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 11:31 pm:

When they started climbing out. DS was about 26 months & dd was about 17 months.

By Jackie on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 07:51 am:

My 2 older kids went straight from crib to a twin bed. I didnt want to waste money on a toddler bed. They were both 3yrs old. Faith is 16 months old and still in a crib. She will stay in it until 3, unless she starts climbing out, which I doubt. She will go right to a twin bed as well.

By Debbie on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 08:01 am:

I would suggest going straight to a twin bed when your ds is ready. We did this with my oldest when he was 2. With my youngest, he was climbing out of his crib at 18 months. I don't know why I thought he would be too small for a twin bed, but I did. So, we got him a toddler bed. Big waste of money. He moved too much in his sleep and he kept falling out of it. We ended up putting him in a twin bed a month later.

By Heaventree on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 08:02 am:

21 months when he started to climb out.

We didn't buy a bed, we put two mattresses on the floor.

By Reds9298 on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 08:07 am:

I plan to wait until she starts trying to climb out.

By Hlgmom on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 08:26 am:

She was 18 mos- straight to a twin- she has loved it ever since!!!

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 08:48 am:

We never used toddler beds. At about the age of 2, they transitioned straight from the crib to a regular bed. We started them out on a mattress on the floor and then eventually put the bed together as normal, with a bed rail.

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 10:21 am:

Sarah went into a twin bed at about 21 months, because I was sick of changing crib sheets. She wasn't climbing out or anything. I just wanted to move on.

With Emily, we probably would have gone right to a twin bed, but we only lived in a 2-BR place and there wasn't room for one. So, she went to a toddler bed. She was 20 months and she hadn't acutally climbed out, but had put her foot on the upper rail. I thought climbing out wasn't far away.

By Reds9298 on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 11:07 am:

I also doubt that we will use a toddler bed. Our crib converts to a daybed, then we'll go to a twin with rails...I think:)

By Melanie on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 11:40 am:

Ds #2 was the only one who used a toddler bed. He was 14 months. I was concerned because his older brother was climbing in and out of the crib to visit his brother everyday, and I knew it was a matter of time before little brother followed. I probably wouldn't have bothered with a toddler bed with him, either, except when shopping one day I happened upon a really cool yellow car buggy bed that was on clearance for $17.97!

Ds #1 was 19 months when we switched him to a twin bed as we were almost due with ds #2.

Dd was about 21 months. She had a twin set up in her room all along and I was ready for the extra space her crib was taking up.

By Feona on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 12:22 pm:

You can just put a box spring and mattress on the floor. Cheaper and less work. No setting up two beds.

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, December 18, 2005 - 08:08 pm:

We went straight from the crib to a twin bed, minus the bedframe. Jeff went into it @ 14 months, a few weeks before Jen was born.

By Tayjar on Sunday, December 18, 2005 - 09:03 pm:

We went straight to a double bed at 22 months for DD. DS was born then and needed the crib.

By Mommmie on Sunday, December 18, 2005 - 09:23 pm:

Never. Straight to twin bed.

By Andi on Monday, December 19, 2005 - 12:26 am:

Dylan was around 18 months. We are going to start Taylor in a Twin Size bed after the holidays.
We went straight from a crib to a twin bed with DS and I plan on doing the same with Taylor. I think Toddler Beds are a waste of money...JMO. :)

By Unschoolmom on Monday, December 19, 2005 - 10:26 am:

Ditto Andi, I was never sure what the point of them was except as one of those 'stages' thing (like cereal, books, etc.) the marketing departments dream up to fluff up sales. Twin bed here as well.

By Pamt on Monday, December 19, 2005 - 11:10 am:

Another straight to twin bed at about 2 yrs of age.

By Bellajoe on Monday, December 19, 2005 - 11:38 am:

When my ds was born, my dd went straight to a twin bed, she was about 20 months old. IMO, toddler beds are a waste of money. We just put a bed rail on her bed and she did fine.

We moved ds to a twin bed when he started climbing out of his crib. He was about 22 months old.

By Breann on Monday, December 19, 2005 - 07:12 pm:

I agree with Andi. We went straight to twin beds also. One was at 14 months, the other was at 16-18 months.

By Angellew on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 - 10:45 am:

YUP!!!! I bought a toddler bed and it was a HUGE waste of money! She hates it! We ended up bringing it to Grandma's house for when she stays there, but the still hates it and sleeps with her grandma! We put my DD staight into a twin a couple of months before her second birthday and it was fine! We got a platform bed, with the drawers under (no boxspring), and found it to be much sturdier than a regular frame and boxspring! It has worked out perfect!

By Sunny on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 - 11:59 am:

Well, I think toddler beds do serve a purpose. When space is a consideration, when you are expecting another baby and need to make the transition to a bed and your older child is still in the crib, when you have a climber who is too big for the crib but still moves all over the bed and would fall out if not for the guard rails. I know there are rails you can buy to affix to the side of a twin bed and putting the mattress on the floor will lessen the distance to the ground, but not everyone wants to do that. Also, many of the cribs made today can be converted into a toddler bed, then a twin, so depending on the kind of crib you bought, you may not need to spend the extra money.

I used a toddler bed for kids #3, 4, and 5 (though my youngest never used a crib). My older two never used one. Generally, anywhere between 18 months and 2 years is when the transition is made out of the crib. :)

Jade will be 2 inFeb and is still in the crib as long as I can keep her in there. Timmy was out of his crib by 18 months because he was a climber and kept getting out. He went into a toddler bed because of space in his room and Jade when the time comes will use the same toddler bed Timmy had we still have it in the garage.

By Kate on Friday, December 30, 2005 - 11:57 pm:

Ages 3 and 3.5, straight to twin. Personally, I think cribs that convert into this and that are what are a waste of money if you plan to have more children. Then you end up buying more CRIBS for the second and third, etc. children!
