Debbie - Food related reflux question

I saw your post on the "rules" thread and it made me wonder what kind of stuff does your son eat? Randy was diagnosed with reflux at three months old and has never outgrown it. He is very picky, too and I really thought it was his oral mototr/sensory issues stopping him until the ot told me that many kids who suffer from reflux have eating issues because for so long they associated food with pain/discomfort.
Randy will eat very few foods - chicken nuggets, french fries, pizza, pasta (sometimes - but no meatball) turkey hot dog, sandwiches of bologna, ham or turkey, sometimes green beans, peas, carrots, broccoli and fruit.
He will not eat beef - except hamburger that I make and even then, it's a struggle. Pizza with anything but sauce and cheese. He won't eat roast chicken or pork chops or meatloaf (rarely).
Now when I say he'll eat it, I mean it's a struggle, but I can usually get him to get it down.
Any stuff your son likes, that I might be able to get Randy to try?

How did your son do on the Prevacid, btw?
Thanks,
Ame

Ame, your ds sounds a lot like mine. I was told the same thing at one of his ot sessions!! He wasn't really diagnosed until 4, so she thinks it will take a long time to get him past this. I always offer new foods, but don't make an issue of it.

Ds will eat oatmeal, pancakes, cereal, or a granola bar for breakfast. Lunch is the hardest meal because he won't eat bread. He usually eats cheese/crackers, peanut butter crackers, or chicken noodle soup. But, he won't eat the chicken, so it is really brooth and noodles. Dinner, we are up to 4 things, fettuccini, speghetti, mac and cheese, and chicken nuggets. He will not eat any other form of meat except chicken nuggets. He eats grapes, apples, and corn. For snacks, he eats yogart, pudding, goldfish and chex mix. Of course he likes some junk food, chips, ice cream, popsicles.

He is now off the prevacid. After he is on it for awhile, it starts to constipate him. He is now on Zantac. His GI doctor wants to take him off of it after the first of the year. I just know the reflux is going to come back and I really don't get why she keeps taking him off meds. I am thinking of switching doctors.

Thanks. Yes their food tastes are very similar. Thanks for the list there are some things there I'll let Randy try.

The same thing happened to us when we tried the Prevacid, but the Zantac was no longer working well for him. He already has constipation issues - even the zantac constipated him. We live on Bebefiber and Kondremul here lol!

It really is important to have a doc that understands that this is not something that will just go away. Our GI is wonderful, but we're in NY.

Have you tried giving him Gaviscon about 15 minutes befor he eats and then right after? I've found this helps Randy quite a bit.

His reflux also seems to be agravated by stress or illness. It will be gone, then he'll pick up a virus and it's back. It is so frustrating!

I see how passionate my little girl is about food and how eager she is to eat just about anything - and then I see my son stuck in this food rut and I feel so bad. I feel responsible somehow ... even though I know I'm not.

Dinner time is so frustrating!
Sounds like you have a better handle on it than I do. I need to take a page out fo your book and just not stress over what he eats or doesn't eat.

Thanks again!
Ame

Ame, my oldest ds eats everything, so it was frustrating watching Josh pick at everything. It is hard not to worry about whether they are getting the proper nutrition to help them grow. I was pretty frustrated in the beginning. But when I get upset about it, I always try and remember that at their age they can't rationalize like us....the medicine will make it better, so I can eat, they just remember the pain. They just have to eventually forget the pain.

My ds is doing really well with Zantac. I just wish his doctor would leave him on it for awhile. I guess I am just going to have to look for a new doctor. The one he has now really made me mad at our last visit.

Ds also gets flare-ups when he is sick. It makes it worse that he has asthma too. Anytime he has any kind of drainage or runny nose, it acts up. I just really hope he outgrows it. I just feel so bad for him some days.
