Spelling/vocab helper

my oldest Ds (15) didn't believe has never bought into the concept of homework (til now, that is, but that's another story altogether) so I never saw his spelling words, my 11yr old Ds has never had any probs with, but Dd (7yrs old ) has had some trouble ... phonics just eludes her altogether, she used to write mirror image backwards even !

We went to that site this past week and I think it helped ! This next week we'll try to visit it daily.Spelling rules and phonics make no sense to her, so I just need to give her more opportunities to see and use those words. SO much better than flash cards we used as kids !!

Anyway, if you moms aren't familiar with this site, it's incredible ! You can input up to 15 spelling/vocab words and then your munchkin can proceed to do wordsearches, crosswords, definition/sentence matching, even 'hangmouse' (like hangman) some of the games are even printable !

Just thought I'd share with ya'll !

Harlena,
How great. Sounds like fun. We're all wordsmiths in this house.

We love phonics based programs. Whole language simply doesn't work wih kids with reading difficulties.

Orton Gillingham Phonics Programs and the Orton Gillingham society are a great source.

Harlena,
I finally went up on the site you recommended, spellingcity.com. So many fun games just using your child's spelling words. I love anything that takes boring stuff and makes it fun. My youngest is a good speller but anything that makes learning fun this year is helpful.

Thanks

we use this weekly (well usually we do) the problem I have with it, is that I wish I could save the words, so that I don't have to input them in every time. I know the child can input them, and maybe that would help, but I don't want to take a chance on them accidentally inputting the word/s incorrectly and then practicing them that way (son wrote down 3-4 spelling words wrong one week at school, and that's how he remembered them, even after I got the corrected for him, unfortunately they stuck in his brain the wrong way ! agghhh !)

Maybe there is a way to save those words, and it's not like typing in 15 words is really a big deal, but sometimes every minute you can save in the course of an evening as important !

O my gosh - my son has done that more than once - written it wrong and actually practiced it that way - actually have seen that in every subject. I check all the study notes now!!!!!!
