Math - Tools to help

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Math - Tools to help

Anybody found any websites or electronic gizmos that help with the drudgery of math practice by making it fun, We have got to practice more mental math (e.g. times tables) to pick up speed but if my little guy gets even a hint of schoolesque practice - well suffice it to say that its not helpful. Since they do drugery in school I'm hoping for an alternative.

Tell me if any are fun. I can't imagine what magic they will do to make it fun.

I used to enjoy a competition in the class. But there can only be one winner so that isn't good for everyone.

It is easier to practice with a friend. Read the tables together with rhythm, like in a song. Then one can say the first part 'one fives are' and the other friend can answer 'five'

Hi Feona,

Love your first 2 links for many reasons. The first one has a real muli-sensory approach which is what I need at this point. My little guy is so tired of rote that he decorates his worksheets etc. anything but pump out the answers at a clip. This is a child who knew his 12x's as a kindergartener now wails when he sees a math sheet.

On this site there is also a gifted and learning disabled section and some interactive fun exercises.

The second site has a link to a game sales sight called mindware -

math games etc. Reminded me about a jumping math mat I used to have that allowed you to be in motion and do math. Its been over 10 yrs since I thought about it - used it for my gifted but LD middle son. Maybe time to find it or buy again.

Thanks again

They also said the child can make a poster and look at it.

For visual learners.

Sing for auditory learners and everybody.

Also we were just doing the times table for 2 and 3s.

I think the only ones they are going to have trouble with are

anything times 6 and 7 and 8 and 9 and 11 and 12

The rest might be easy. So you only have to study those numbers. That is my hope anyway.

This is a timed multipation game.

I would set it to a minute or two or three. No use getting the child crazy.

Feona,

These are wonderful math games. Today is another snow day. Expecting 8-14 inches more snow. This will be a good day to try some of these games.

We were practicing division yesterday and did great so I think boredom with the routine practices is part of the issue. This will help keep practice interesting.

Thank you,
Linda

Postscript:

Entire family played multilication math games. The least "kiddie" like games were at:

http://www.multiplication.com/interactive_games.htm

We made monsters, threw snowballs and captured castles all on-line and did a lot of math.

At kidsnumbers.com we liked crashing the space ships on moon math also testing how far into space (it keeps track) the ships would go if you missed their landing pads but we did do math to restore our fuel so we could crash again. Ah boys - men and video games!
