Question about formula(ounces)

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2005: Question about formula(ounces)
By Kolbysmom on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 09:12 am:

Raya hasn't been to her 6 month check-up yet, so I thought I would ask here for now.

She is still only taking 4 oz. of formula at a time. She eats every 3 hours. My question: Even though she's gaining weight, should I try to up the ounces, or just leave it alone?? For the longest time, she would act like she was hungry way before the 3 hours were up. Ever time I tried to up the intake, she just spit up more. So, I would take it back down to the 4. She seems to be content for the moment. She's eating cereal and other various baby foods. I know at this point, Kolby was already up to 8 ozs. at a time. So, do I leave it alone?? Just curious.

When is the 6 month checkup? If it is only a few weeks or a month, I'd wait as long as she seems to be healthy and appears to be gaining a bit of weight. She may just have a small stomach that will expand as she grows. If it is going to be significantly more than a month, I'd think it is worth a call to the ped's office to let them know.

It will be sometime this month. She turned 6 months on the 3rd, but I haven't scheduled her appointment yet.

Yes, she's gaining tons of weights! She weights about 20 lbs now. I don't understand really, how she keeps gaining weight. But she does. I think I will hold off for now. She's thriving, and I guess that's all that matters at this points.

Thanks Ginny for your suggestion.

Well, I think that if she is gaining and is healthy, it would seem to be fine. I do think that at that age, my dd was taking more than that, but she was also going longer in between feedings. I bet if you count it out, your dd is getting as much as any other child, it is just she is eating more often.

One of the things I learned when I was doing the childraising thing was to make a list on the frig and take it with me when I took the child to the pediatrician, so I wouldn't forget all the important questions that ocurred to me between visits.

Ditto Ginny. I did the list thing during the first 6mths when I had the most questions.
Natalie was taking about 7oz-8oz. at that age, and eating every 4 hours, but if she's gaining weight and seems happy and healthy, I'd just wait until you see the doctor. You could always try a few feedings with an oz. more and see how she feels about it.

My DD was always a 4 oz baby! But, yes talk to the Ped. and maybe they have some suggestions. I wouldn't worry though. My DD ate what seemed like so little, but kept on gaining and growing, and even in the 90th percentile for the longest time. Good luck:)

My ds ate so much more then my dd. She never got passed 6 oz. I think she probably was still on 4oz at that time. She also about 9 months refused baby food. She hated it. She went to table food much sooner then my ds. I think if she is growing and seems happy she's fine. It would be nice for you if you could up it a little though and go longer in between. But if she just spits it up I wouldn't push it.

Both my kids were breastfed exclusivly so I have no idea how much they were actually getting. I say if she's growing well I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like she is. Go ahead and ask your ped if it will bring you peace of mind though. That's what they're there for. :)
