Training pants

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2005: Training pants

I've heard that using cloth training pants speeds up the potty training process. I was wondering if anyone could help me in this regard. I'm thinking about getting them. DS is 2 1/2 and has been using the potty for 6 months now. Some days he'll use the potty, and some days he just doesn't feel like it. He lets me know when he has to potty, but more often than not he's a little late. I was just wanting to help him out with the cloth pants because he'll feel when he's wet sooner than with the disposables. Any thoughts? Any recommendations for training pants? (and oh, yeah, disposables are just killing our budget even with coupons. DS loves his pull-ups and no longer wants to wear a diaper.)

It worked for me. My DS is on the large size and several years ago you couldn't buy pull ups in his size so we had to use cloth training pants. His first accident in them was the last. He did not like the wet feeling and began using the potty everytime but I think he was closer to 3 years old. With both my boys I did not buy diapers after they turned 3, I told them you couldn't buy them for 3 year olds. If you haven't used them yet, they still get the wet running down the legs and I used the Carters and Spensers that were really thick. Good Luck!!

I used cloth trainers w/ my DD. I loved them, plus she really felt like a big girl in them.

I've used cloth to train all three of mine. Pull-ups just didn't work with them. I think they feel just like a diaper to the kids. Most kids like to pick out character undies but they don't absorb much at all.

Pull-ups didn't work for my kids. I had a friend who used them and they really drew out the whole potty training process out. There will come a day when the whole potty thing will just "click" and they will be potty trained in a matter of a day or two. With one of my boys we let him pick out his favorite undies at the store and he really bought into the whole "these are your big boy pants you can't pee in them" and he never had an accident in them. I kept all three of them in diapers at night for about 3 months after they were potty trained, until they said no more.

I used training pants with built in plastic pants. They might have been Kooshies. The kids felt the wet, but my furniture was saved. They were great!

I feel like an idiot... but... what are cloth training pants?????

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 12:09 pm:

Thicker underwear for little kids that would absorb more urine than regular underwear.

You're welcome! My first daughter was fairly old, when she potty-trained. She was also at prime "pull-up" age, when they first came out! They did NOT help my cause any! She finally got a diaper rash, from being inside damp pull-ups. We finally developed spines and told her she HAD to wear the training pants so her skin could heal. It was done, within days! We should have insisted a LOT sooner.

My second daughter WANTED to wear underwear and I let her. She was trained far quicker. I think I bought maybe one pack of pull-ups for her. Her defining moment in potty-training was when she pooped in the pink Pocahontas panties! LOL! I think she was horrified what she had done to her underwear!

My DD is really being a bear about the whole potty issue! She's 3 1/2 and, as long as you say to her "it's time to go potty", she goes in and goes (pee only, just once a BM)... but, if it's up to her to tell me when she has to go, she won't. When we're out, she stays dry until we either come home or I bring her to a public restroom and say, now!! She really just doesn't want to do it on her own. But, we are to the point now, where, as long as WE keep to a schedule, she staying in the same pull-up all day and dry! But, gee... washable training pants !!!! that's just awesome!!! :)

Angellew, I saw cloth training pants at Target tonight. They had pink prints for girls and blue prints for boys. They came 3 to a pak. I'm sure you can find them at Walmart, too, in the baby department.

I want to thank you all for your input. I discussed this with dh and he doesn't want me to do the cloth pants thing so we compromised. We are going to switch to the feel and learn by pampers, and if that doesn't work, he'll agree to have us buy the kushies or something similar.
I've been looking for them online and have found several brands, makes and models. One thing that came up on all the opinions I read was that parents wish these had velcro sides for the "big jobs". I actually found some from onestepahead. And momsview has a coupon for this site. Has anyone given these a try?

*Running to Target and Walmart*

It is my mission this weekend! We will get them!

Thanks Dawn!

The velcro sided ones sound awesome! I don't remember seeing those when mine were that age but it would have been helpful! I'd pick up a package of those, since you can find them.
