Teaching him how to read early has its ups and downs...

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Teaching him how to read early has its ups and downs...
By Mrsheidi on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 01:58 pm:

So, I bought a bunch of kids books on anatomy. (Respiratory, digestive system, etc.) Well, I was reading the digestive system one and skipped over a certain word because I don't feel he has to know it yet. I just said, "The place where your poopie comes out of."

BUT...he proceeds to notice I skipped over a vocabulary word and sounds it out. See if you can guess:

"AHHH-NNNN-UUUUS" "AH-NUS!" He was so proud. :) So, like a science teacher I gave him the correct pronunciation and now it's in his vocab. Could be worse...but, I will be shocked if he mentions it at school. The other day he said, "Hey! I burped out my butt!" Boys...

LOL Too funny!! :)

LOL!!! Kids are so funny about anatomy words. I said something to Madison their other day about her butt, and she got confused... apparently she has been calling her girl bits "butt" all this time, even though I taught her the correct terms. So, it could be worse, he could be using another term for it, or it for another part!

He's too smart now! You can't fool him!

By Emily7 on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 12:05 am:

LOL, that is just to cute.

By Breann on Thursday, November 13, 2008 - 11:20 am:

LoL Hopefully he doesn't embarrass you in public with his new found vocabulary word :)

By Cat on Thursday, November 13, 2008 - 11:29 am:

I've always believed in teaching kids proper terms (there's nothing worse than hearing a 3yo girl refer to her privates as her "coochie"!). Dh, on the other hand liked to play with the kids when they were little. Therefore we ended up with "Hoovers" and "Nibbles" from kids that didn't quite grasp pronunciation! rofl It stuck and we joke to this day with our 13 and 15yo's about it.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, November 13, 2008 - 02:12 pm:

I always used correct words, too.

It does get worse. He will use his wisdom for evil one day. My then 11 y/o DD once called her brother a jack donkey. I was laughing so hard I couldn't even tell her it was wrong. She knew she couldn't cuss but donkey isn't a bad word.

Dora, wait until they learn "Don't be a Richard"! lol

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, November 13, 2008 - 05:36 pm:

Cat, I didn't get that one at first, but when I read it to myself, then I realized Richard is the full name for a certain nickname. Then I got it.

By Bellajoe on Thursday, November 13, 2008 - 08:27 pm:

LOL you guys are cracking me up.

Dora it took me a second to figure that one out. LOL

By Melanie on Friday, November 14, 2008 - 10:20 am:

LOL Cat. My boys haven't figured that one out yet...I'll be listening for it now, though!

By Kaye on Friday, November 14, 2008 - 11:47 am:

LOL Cat, that is my dad's name, but growing up he went by his nickname. My friends and I used it a lot. "Oh I guess we need the richard's approval", etc. I am glad he uses his real name now!

By Crystal915 on Friday, November 14, 2008 - 12:29 pm:

LOL @ "Don't be a Richard", I've never thought of that one! The nickname is Tim Allen's last name, before changing it for showbiz. He tells some funny (albeit crude) jokes about it in one of his books, like a sister named Anita, a brother named Harry... not to mention his poor wife having to take the name, and letting the hostess know your party has arrived for your reservation. Totally lowball humor, but you gotta love it.
