Scary--Football injury

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Scary--Football injury
By Cat on Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 07:08 am:

Randy had a football game last night. So far this season we've only had minor injuries on the team--sprains and a couple broken wrists/hands. Well, last night their starting quarterback (B) was tackled during a run. He landed on his stomach, fumbled the ball and the other team picked it up and were immediately stopped. Everyone was getting up and B rolled over onto his back and let out two horrible screams. Thirty minutes later he was being taken off the field in an ambulance. They thought last night he'd broken his femur. After the game Randy was really upset. First for B and second, they lost the game and it knocked them out of the championships. :( I'm sure the kids were terrified! Shoot, we parents in the stands were rattled. B's family was there. The 7th grade coach had his dad go out on the field after about 5 minutes and after about 10 his mom and sister went out. Mom rode to the hospital in the ambulance with him. She looked like she was going to be sick. She's a nurse, so she'll know how to care for it, but sometimes a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, ya know?

We should find out this morning how B's doing. A bunch of us parents talked last night and we are going to get something together for him. Probably a huge bunch of balloons and a big get well cookie. The kid's last game is next Tuesday and pictures are Monday. Poor B is going to have pictures in a cast, probably! If you could say a little prayer for B and his family (and the kids--they were all really shook up), that'd be great.

Why was his family not allowed out there for five whole minutes?? And were Mom and sis kept back for ten minutes, or did they, themselves, choose to wait those ten minutes in the stands?

I'm glad it's just a broken bone...it sounded worse from your initial description. Hope he feels better soon.

They chose not to go out there. Everyone figured he'd just get up. Another kid had been down about 10 minutes earlier and got up after a few minutes (pulled hamstring). The scariest thing was they didn't even move B. He was just laying there on his back the whole time. At one point we thought he'd passed out because from where we were we couldn't see him moving at all. Initially the word from the sideline was that he'd blown his knee and broken the femur. The paramedics totally immobilized his leg before moving him and someone mentioned the main artery that goes through that area. We'll know more this morning. This is the first time these kids have ever been through anything like this--with the ambulance coming and all (a fire truck came first, I guess with first responders). When B screamed the other team's coach ran out onto the field with his med guy. They were closer. Even our own coaches didn't run out there until the ref waved them out. We're so used to these kids just bouncing right back up that when they don't it's a big thing.

Gosh, I hope he's okay. It is scary! Kate, that's one thing that the coaches made VERY clear when ds started playing school sports. You DO NOT go onto the field. If/when they need you, they will call you down. Ds injured his shoulder wrestling, and I stood and watched as the coach took care of it. I didn't even talk to ds until the event was almost over, LOL!

Yes, it is terribly scary. Kate, while you are all getting stuff together for this boy, it would be a good idea to make some casseroles and stuff that can go in the freezer for his family. If he has a fracture, mom is going to have her hands full for a while, and that would be one less thing for her to worry about.

Poor kid. That sounds painful. Will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers.

By Tayjar on Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 11:55 am:

Poor thing. I feel for the boy, his family, and his team.

I saw a 5th grader break his femur last year in a JFl game. The coach yelled at the kid to get up and quit being a wimp. The kid was screaming like no scream you've ever heard a child scream before. It stopped the entire fotoball complex. It took the other team's parents and coaches to get the kid some help. I told the parents of the other team I'd give the coach 2 choices - quit or we are pulling our kids.

When I was in high school, the q-back broke his femur. Only it was sticking out of his leg and stuck in the grass. They had to sedate him on the field and cut from around him. Talk about some distraught parents.

I hope everything turns out well for him. I'll keep them all in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us up to date.

Ugh, Dora! I imagine there were some sick parents in the stands with that compound fracture, too! That's horrible. So is the 5th grader's coach! He may have met up with a few people in the parking lot after the game if he'd pulled that here. We're all very protective of "our" kids, kwim?

I still haven't heard anything. Maybe Randy will have news when he gets home.

Yikes! how scary! This is why I am so glad my boys play baseball!!

By Kaye on Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 03:17 pm:

My son had his first game this week. It is scary, but you know so is riding in a car.

Debbie the worst sports injury I have seen is via baseball. A kid got hit in the eye with a line drive, I guess he missed, but he lost an eye over it. It was scary. Then a few years later we went to see the Reds play. Hubby got hit in the stands, landed in his stomach, between two of the kids heads, wasn't but about a 12 inch gap between their heads. Anyway, it left a bruise for 6 months. I think I have only been to one game since and got the cheap seats!

Kaye - we make all of our infielders wear protective face masks and chest guards now. DD is a pitcher and even puts her mask on during her lessons to get used to the feel of it.

By Cat on Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 05:27 pm:

IT'S NOT BROKEN!!! A friend called a few minutes ago and said B was home by 12:30am this morning on crutches. They said it's either a bad sprain or a deep tissue injury. He even wants to go to school tomorrow (our fall break starts next week for 2 weeks and he wants to see everyone before then). We're all so happy it's not as serious as we thought. :)

By Happynerdmom on Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 05:47 pm:

Oh, that's so great!! Yay! :)

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 06:14 pm:

Good news. Thanks for reporting.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 07:27 pm:

That's good. I think it really takes a lot of force to break a bone, especially one as thick as the femur is! I'm glad it's not broken. I'm sure it still hurts, though, and will take a while to get better, but he won't be "disabled" as long as it would take a femur to heal.

By Melanie on Sunday, October 5, 2008 - 10:46 am:

WOW! I just saw this post, but am so relieved to hear it's not broken! Thank goodness!

We've had the ambulance out on the field a few times. It is almost always precautionary. Your case was different because it was his leg. But if a child goes down and indicates in any way that his neck or back hurt, they won't move him. Even if a couple minutes later he says he's okay and wants to get up. Once they indicate that area, they will immobilize his neck until he gets checked out at the hospital. I just wanted to throw that out there for future reference since the ambulance doesn't necessarily mean it's something major...it usually means they want to be sure it isn't.

One of our players broke his wrist on Wednesday night during practice. He took a helmet to the arm. It was a nasty looking break, but they were able to reset the bones without surgery. At one point the EMT asked him to rate his pain on a scale of 1-10, and he said 5. He was such a brave kid! Although his dad wasn't looking so good at that point.

Anyway, I am so glad to hear your player is okay. Although I am sorry your team was knocked out of the championships. :(
