Did you drink coffee when you were pregnant?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2005: Did you drink coffee when you were pregnant?
By Monicamomof3 on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 09:40 am:

My first three pregnancies I didn't touch a drop. Now I'm reading that one cup a day is ok. So, I've been drinking about 1 cup once or twice a week. THEN- I read that it is bad. HELP! I know it is prob. best not to.

Did you drink coffee? How much? Any problems with baby because of it?

By Eve on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 10:15 am:

At first, I was too sick to even touch any, but now, I have a little bit in the morning. I love coffee and I usually never finish a cup, so I feel fine about having a little now.

I have friends that are eating tuna, but my Dr. said no. Some are eating lunch meat and mine said no. Go figure. I think a little is ok. Give your Dr. a call. I'm sure they wouldn't mind helping you make the best choice.HTH

By Heaventree on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 10:45 am:

I drank Swiss Water Decaf with the first. Starbucks has the best.

With the second I drank one cup of caffienated everyday, I'm nursing and still have one a day.

Baby has days and nights mixed up, but I don't think that coffee is a factor otherwise he'd be up during the day.

You just have to watch your total caffiene intake, which would include coffee, tea and chocolate. I don't think a cup day will hurt, but ask your doctor.

I drank one Coke a day during my pregnancy, so the same amount of caffeine. I wouldn't worry about 1 cup of coffee.

By Colette on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 11:01 am:

I think one cup once or twice a week is fine. I totally could not drink coffee when I was pregnant though, the smell made me ill.

Eve, I think your dr is right on about the tuna. There was a report the other day that fresh tuna and swordfish sold in local markets have WAY more mercury in them than previously thought - more than deemed a "safe" amount, one group is trying to make stores post warnings about them.

I didn't drink coffee soda or anything with caffeine but it was my first pregnancy and I was paranoid. I have read that 1 cup a day isn't bad though.

I drank one diet dr pepper a day with Connor. What you are doing right now is fine.
Just keep up your water intake. The water surrounding the baby needs to be "changed" all the time.

With first I was unable to even smell the stuff even before I knew I was pregnant at 3 months. W/ this last one, I drank one cup of decaff on most days. Sometimes just didn't feel like it. No problems what so ever w/ baby.

He's still the most beautiful boy I know!

No caffeine here- though I did read the one cup a day thing somewhere too! If I were going to have one cup a day I would be certain to cut out any other caffeine from my diet...JMO

I drank Diet Coke, when I was pregnant. Don't remember how many in a day, though. Kids are fine!

By Imamommyx4 on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 11:03 am:

I limited to 1 caffeine drink a day if that much and didn't drink diet at all.

By Brandy on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 11:17 am:

I usually drank sprite never coffee because i don't even drink it now or before i was pregnant didn't like the smell or taste lol (grandpa gave me some when i was younger bleck lol)
I think you are fine drinking what you are though = )

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 04:23 pm:

With baby number 1 i drank no caffeine because i was paranoid. I drank root beer and sunkist pop because those have no caffine, but i think I mostly drank milk and water.

With number 2 i was much more relaxed and drank whatever i wanted to, in moderation....no alcohol of course.

I ate lunch meat when i was pregnant and both my kids are fine. I don't know why they all of a sudden decide things like that are not good for the babies.

By My3cuties on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 04:57 pm:

I didn't really change my diet much at all (not saying that's right) and all of my girls are fine. Hailey is a little wild, but I don't think that is because of anything I ate, she is just very curious. :)

By Agreen on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 09:01 pm:

i was such a coffee drinker before DD was born. When I found out I was pregnant, i stayed away with a few caffine beverages here and there. I loved drinking Decafe Mocha Java from Starbucks, one could hardly tell it was decaf. Now I do one a day. I stayed away from Tuna and cold cuts too, but toward the end of the pregnancy I cheated with that too. I think moderation is okay.

By Missmudd on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 10:23 pm:

I drank maybe a cup a day for all of the guys. Never had a problem, but I am kind of a weird coffee drinker. I think I use it as an excuse to keep the kids at bay first thing in the morning. I tell them, "after I finish my cup of coffee" to any demand right off the bat. I at most drink 2 cups a day first thing in the am.

By Feona on Thursday, September 22, 2005 - 06:45 am:

How about tea? Is tea okay?

By Luvn29 on Thursday, September 22, 2005 - 09:46 am:

I can't drink milk. It makes me sick. Everything made me sick with both pregnancies, and only thing I could drink was sodas. I did drink lemonade and orange juice, etc. And root beer helped keep my stomach calm. But I drank coke, and such everyday, with every meal. Both children were fine. I had problems but nothing due to that. I never smoked or drank alcohol, but I didn't limit my caffeine, and my dr. didn't have a problem with it.

By Enchens on Friday, September 23, 2005 - 02:19 am:

Sometimes all I could take to help calm my stomach and actually get some food down was a Coke or a Pepsi. (Morning sickness was a 24 hour affair for 8 months.) Doc said as long as I didn't overdo it, it was fine.

By Imamommyx4 on Saturday, September 24, 2005 - 12:07 am:

My OB recommended limiting the caffeine to no more than 2 a day preferably 1 if I really thought I needed it. That would include any caffeinated drink--tea, sodas, coffee, etc and or chocolate although that is not caffeine but still has the same stimulant effect they want you to avoid.

Decaffeinated coffee and teas and sodas would not be an issue. So it depends on what kind of tea you were drinking. Or those herbal teas are fine if you like them but they don't have caffeine in them.

I had one cup every Sunday during sunday school....mmmmmmmmmmmm...and I got lectured by some old man on how terrible I was for drinking coffee pregnant!
