Baby ~ Days and Nights Mixed Up

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2005: Baby ~ Days and Nights Mixed Up

Me again!

Cameron has his days and night mixed up. He sleeps long stretches throughtout the day, up to 4 and sometimes 5 hours.

His night time schedule however is as follows:

11 pm feed
1 am feed
3 am feed
6 am feed

It's not a bad schedule, I would just like to turn it around so we are getting the 4 hour stretch at night.

Any suggestions.

Thanks again!

Probably just a growth spurt.

Hang in there!

I would try getting him awake enough every 2 hours during the day to eat. Then just let him wake you up when he is hungry in the mid. of the night.

I agree that it is probably a growth spurt, is he 3 weeks now? the next one comes at about 6-7 weeks. But I would try to keep him up during the day. NOt just waking him up to eat, but for the first day I would just kind of mess with him, hold him while sleeping, so he isn't as soundly sleeping, move around, talk to him, etc.

I remember feeding my oldest one at midnight, 2, 4, and 6 and her sleeping sooooo well during the day! She was sleeping in the living room and I was playing my piano, and it didn't phase her one bit! LOL! Although, she slept through the night at about 8 weeks, though, so I was spoiled, eventually.

I think all babies go through this. Honestly I could not wake mine for the life of me! It is so frustrating but know that it's not forever! That is the good part. If you can make it through those first 2 months it will get better.

UPDATE

I went to see a physician today who is a lactation specialist. She suggested a few things.

1. Co-sleeping. I was letting Cameron sleep with me so I could get some sleep, but I was worried and uncomfortable with the idea. She swears it's safe providing I follow the protocol. So we are back to sleeping together. I had bought a little bassinette that you put on your bed but he didn't sleep very well in it.

2. She said nurse, nurse, nurse as much as possible during the day. She said if I see that he is in REM Sleep wake him up and offer him the breast. She also suggested to try and get him to cluster feed between 6 and 9 pm so that he sleeps at night.

She said I have to try and get this turned around or I could be stuck with this pattern for some time. UGH.

She also mentioned the reason he is so sleepy is he is getting so much milk, he's already 9 lbs! Everyone is joking that I should go off to the special nursey at the hospital and feed babies. My body thinks I had a litter.

I am so exhausted, he fed every 1 to 1-1/2 last night, I thought I was going to lose my mind. It wouldn't be so bad if I could sleep during the day but I have Matthew to take care of. We all went for a nap today between 11 and 1 but it's not enough to get me thru.

Thanks for all your comments and support - wish me luck in turning this around.

I don't know what you're current routine is, but it might help to bathe him at night before you plan to put him to bed. I know my kids slept better (and longer) after their baths.

May I also add that I think it's wonderful you have a doctor who advocates co-sleeping? Not many I've talked to do. :)

My son is currenty 6wks and he is finally starting to sleep through the night, but I have noticed he only naps about 2 hrs thru out the day and wakes up to eat.. For the last couple of nights he actaully slept 6hrs straight.. It gets better I promise!
