Sandwiches for little eaters

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2005: Sandwiches for little eaters
By Amecmom on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 01:09 pm:

Recently, there have been alot of posts about toddler food ideas. Today I made my 11 month old a turkey sandwich with American cheese on Pepridge Farm Very Thin whole wheat bread. I cut it into bite size pieces and she ate the whole thing! I like using this bread because the regular bread is just too thick.
Maybe this will help some of the moms having trouble with meat? Maybe the bread and the cheese will hide the turkey so some of your more picky eaters will like it?
My little eating machine loved it!

For lunch today, Matt had grilled cheese sandwiches cut into strips and he dipped the strips into Tomato soup.

Tuna sandwiches are are too, but not really for dipping. You could also try flaked ham or chicken.

You can also compress the bread with a frying pan or rolling pin. I used to do this because one of my kids would just pinch off the top layer of bread and eat it. This way the bread is so thin it's easier for them to eat. We also used to make sandwiches in the sandwich griller and wait for them to cool back to room temperature. They loved them when they were little.

ugh...we tried this today...he didn't even touch them...just shook his head!
Feeding time is SUCH a struggle!!!

Try cutting the sandwiches with a cookie cutter in fun shapes. My kids still love to find these sandwiches in their school lunches.

You may also have him make his own sandwich. Lay out different foods and let him pick the ones he wants to add.

When he's old enough, I'll try that!!

Sorry you are having such a rough time. My son was like that. He has now become a good eater, but there were days when I wondered if he'd be on mashed food forever!
Don't give up! One study showed it took 20 tries before kids accept new foods!

Thanks, Ame. That DOES give me hope. It's very hard when he won't even touch it. I have a hard time investing $ in new foods for him, but I will always give him whatever we are eating in hopes he will at least touch it and maybe eat it!!
