Tricks for the changing table?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2005: Tricks for the changing table?
By Mrsheidi on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 - 07:47 pm:

Any WWE wrestling fans here? I feel like I've got the pee wee version of the "Rock"!
Connor is constantly kicking, crying, trying to get off the changing table, etc etc et cetera....
I've tried singing, toys, and smiling. All it does is get me kicked in the chest!! I feel like he doesn't know what he's doing when he is hitting me, yet when I say "no sir" it gets him even more angry. I've been ignoring it, but MAN, I feel like I have to workout in order to get this guy changed!!!

Any ideas?

IKWYM!!!!! Natalie will lay nicely for Daddy on the changing table but for me it's a wrestling match, too!!! I've wondered the same thing... I think it's just a phase. My friend's 15mth. old is the same way.

Right there with you! Wait until he starts running away :).

I try unusual toys, things that really grab his attention and that he only gets when he is being changed or I try to make him laugh with tickle games. It will pass.

Games do not work with Natalie, at least for me! She seems to think Daddy's changing games are much more fun than mine. )
I have thought about when we no longer use the changing table...oh Lordy, there will be a stinky butt runnin' around my house and I'll be chasin' it!LOL

By Reds9298 on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 - 08:43 pm:

My best bet is to let her touch something she's not 'really supposed to...the lotion, the rash cream, the monitor.
PS: What about clipping nails??? That is our absolute NIGHTMARE in this house. She actually will make us feel guilty for doing it because she thinks she's being TORTURED! :)

By Agreen on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 - 09:25 pm:

I use the "fun" toys too. she loves the lotions and nose drops bottle. It is working for me now, but i am sure things will change soon LOL! I also try and wrap the diaper around her while she is standing and quickly get her down for the tabs, doesnt always work though...

As for clipping nails, i found that i can catch a few while dd is busy eating. She usually lets me get away with it that way. I'm lucky if i get three done in a sitting. But figured if i can a few done everyday, by the time we're finished i can start over again LOL!!! :)

VERY normal toddler behavior. BTDT with both my kids. Yes, items that are not usually allowed to be played with are great distractions during diaper changes. Our car keys or the TV remote always worked wonders. That's the only time they were allowed to play with them and they seemed to catch on. Trouble is, they don't want to give them up. LOL! Sometimes singing songs or giving them a new and different toy or book works. No, you don't have to keep buying new toys. Rotate toys by stashing some away for a few months. When you pull them out again it's like magic! LOL!

I used to trim their nails while they were sleeping or very groggy. That's a tip I got from a mommy board similar to this one, BTW. :)

Good ideas...and, yes, the nail clipping. VERY hard now. He always wants to GO GO GO.
So, I have to do one here and there...I try at the high chair the most and that usually helps.

By Reds9298 on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 - 10:45 pm:

On the nail clippings...the last 2 times Daddy holds her arms down and sings "Old McDonald" while I clip and she does MUCH better!

By Andi on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 - 10:47 pm:

I usually give Taylor a small toy or something safe off the changing table. I also have the advantage of having Dylan...he is the best helper when it comes to a Crazy Baby on the changing table. He kisses her and sings to her while I change her and she loves it.

As for clipping her nails...I sit her on my lap and just do it. She usually cries and wiggles but I just get a firm grip on her hand and clip away. As soon as I finish she stops crying and gets back to her business.:)

Now that she is walking and close to running, it's even harder to do just about anything all she wants to do is Go, Go, Go!

YES, Andi! When I had my little brother here, he was a TON of help keeping him entertained!
I tried giving him something he's never seen before and that WORKED!! It was a waterless antibiotic wash pump but he was fascinated!! Later on, I'll try the Desitin cream.
Thanks everyone!!

When my kids hit that stage, i changed them on the floor. In order to not get kicked i would lay one of my legs over the baby's legs to pin him/her down. I didn't hurt them, i just kept them from moving so i could change them quickly.

The toy thing never worked with mine.

I used to clip their nails in their sleep also. For changing I let the kids at work put a glove on their hand or hold the powder. Sometimes if they refuse to lay down and they are just wet I will do a stand up diaper change. Its different though at first.

By Emily7 on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 05:21 pm:

I never used a changing table, I always thought they were kind of a waste. It is just as easy to throw a blanket on the sofa or floor.
I put my legs on either side of them so that they can't roll around. I also use a toy, lotion or the travel wipes container to get them to lay still.
I have done the standing up change in the car or in a bathroom rest area, rather than laying them on the floor.

By Lauram on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 07:31 pm:

Stand up change. That's my recommendation. Pretty soon it will be the running change. You'll get the hang of it! :)

By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 09:26 pm:

I wish he *could* stand!! He doesn't walk yet. He'll stand, but definitely not through a diaper change. I like the changing table so I don't have to get on the floor...bad knees from ski racing all these years. I feel so old!! LOL

Maybe try a pull-up? The smallest size should fit. It's sooo much faster.
I always do manicures when he's asleep.

If I get him in the first 20 minutes of a nap, he is in deep sleep.
