My dd (18 months)got her hand smashed in the door on Mother's Day, well now it looks like the nail is coming off. It looks like it is peeling from the bottom. What do I do for her? Is it best to leave it alone? She is picking at it & chewing on her hand.

By Crystal915 on Sunday, June 26, 2005 - 04:23 pm:

Leave it alone. If it's becoming a problem, or you are afraid it'll snag on something, put a bandage over it. (((Olivia))) Poor thing!

Thank you Crystal. It kind of looks like a new nail might be pushing the old one out (does that make sense?).

You're welcome. Since it's been a few weeks since she injured it, it may well be the new nail pushing the old one out. Trim whatever is loose, and keep it covered to keep from snagging. :)

When this happened with Timmy, we did what Crystal is suggesting and just trimmed the loose part off. The new nail will grow soooooo fast. It probably bothers you way more than it does her.

When we would ask Timmy to see his finger, he would reply with an exasperated "AGAIN".

Hugs Emily and Olivia. Ditto the others. Just make sure you keep the injured nail as clean and dry as possible. Maybe use a little Neosporin?
