Will it pop on its own?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Will it pop on its own?
By Tklinreston on Thursday, June 23, 2005 - 05:15 pm:

My 5 year old ds for many months had a tiny little flesh colored cyst on his cheek, which the drs said to just leave alone. I think he might have tried to pop it and now it's gotten much bigger and redder in the last week. Looks like a big pimple. I never had pimples and am not sure if it will eventually pop on its own or should I try to pop it. It looks almost infected to me because the coloration is definitely redder than before. Any advice?

I wouldn't try to pop it. If you think it has become infected I'd take your DS back to the doctor.

I agree with Trina.

If it has become inflamed, get it looked at again. Do Not Try to Pop It, and infection can easily spread to surrounding tissue.

I'm just in shock that you've never had pimples!

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, June 23, 2005 - 06:12 pm:

I agree, having had to deal with cysts all my life. Do NOT try to pop or open it on your own. If it has grown and looks red, a doctor should see it quickly - especially something on the face. In the meantime, try putting a topical antibiotic on it a couple of times a day - especially a topical antibiotic ointment that has some pain relief stuff in it.

Could it be this: Molluscum Contagiosum?

By Tklinreston on Thursday, June 23, 2005 - 09:37 pm:

Annie, I looked up molluscum contagiosum and it doesn't appear to be that. It really looks like a very big inflamed pimple. The top of the bump is white under the skin. My gut told me not to pop it. I'll take him to see the dr tomorrow morning and as Ginny suggested put some topical antibiotic on it tonight. As to pimples, I have been very lucky not to have had them. I do have a some very tiny little cysts or bumps on my face, though. Thanks everyone.

I'm with Heidi. I'm still trying to get over the fact that you have never had pimples!

By Tklinreston on Friday, June 24, 2005 - 01:02 pm:

I took ds to the dr today. It all started from a clogged hair follicle. It is not a pimple but in the same family. It's now infected so I will be applying Bacitran (?) on it 3 x's a day after putting a heat compress on it. The heat will help open it up and allow it to discharge on its own and heal. But as you all said, they told me NOT to pop it because it will scar. So thanks again.

I'm glad that you took him and the answers you were looking for.
