Poop Question

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Poop Question
By Andi on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 09:18 pm:

About 3 weeks ago I started giving Taylor whole Milk with her meals and Formula in her bottle, just to get her comfortable with milk. Well last week I started her on just Milk and her Poop is a very chalky color. She has very loose BM's and a very bad rash on her butt because I am changing her all the time. In a matter of 4 hours I changed...ready for this...10 diapers. Now some only had a little bit of Poop in them but I wasn't going to let her sit in it and make her rash worse.

The doctor said it will take her body some time get comfortable with the milk. If it's still doing this to her tomorrow I think I will take her in.

My question is have any of you had this problem when you switched? I never had this problem with DS.

TIA :)

My sister had this exact problem. She took her to the pediatrician, too, and he said to go back to the formula and try again in a few weeks and to keep repeating the scenario until she could tolerate it. She was a year when this happened. To my knowledge she is still on the formula at 15 months now. Good luck!

I would switch to 2% & see if that helps at all, that is what I had to do with ds, but that was because whole milk constipated him.

When I started to take them off of formula, I added a bit of milk to each bottle, and gradually, over the course of weeks probably, had them on just soy. (they were all allergic to milk) Perhaps doing it gradually would help.
I would also suspect an intolerance with that rash.

My Ped. also recommended to add milk to the formula then gradually add more each time until you are up to all milk. As Marcia said I would think of intolerence with the rash and changing diapers so much.

Maybe going to 2% would be a good idea...not as much fat?? It sounds like you did the switch really well, she's just not tolerating it. How much is she having a day? A friend of mine said that her ped told her that they just had to cut down the amount that her ds could tolerate in a day, so they stopped giving around 24oz/day and cut it back. I would check with your ped. Good luck!

She could be Lactose Intolerant(SP?). Try some Lactaid Milk and see what that does. My DH drinks it because regular milk messes up his tummy.

Thank you ladies, you are all so much help.

I am going to see what happens over the weekend, I will cut back her milk intake. I think I will take her in on Monday if she is still having trouble. The good thing is our Pediatrition is open on the weekends so I can take her in tomorrow if she needs it.

How is Taylor doing Andi?

By Andi on Monday, June 20, 2005 - 06:41 pm:

She had her first "hard" Poop this morning. I know TMI. :)

Thanks for asking! I have been busy getting ready for her party on Saturday!!!

Just a comment, I wouldn't switch to 2% milk. At this age they need all the fat for neural development.

I agree, I left her on Whole Milk....just took her body some time to adjust.

Andi, we're having the opposite problem since we've been on milk. DD's having a REALLY hard time going. I'm upping the juice everyday, which is helping some, but she's never had such hard stools before. They're all so different!
