When did you lower your crib mattress?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: When did you lower your crib mattress?
By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 09:37 am:

Connor is crawling a lot now but not pulling up on anything yet. But, I'm not sure if I should lower the mattress or not?

By Vicki on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 09:57 am:

If in doubt at all, I would lower it. If he is getting around really well, it is only a matter of time before he starts pulling up! Better safe than sorry!

By Kaye on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 10:09 am:

That is exactly when I lowered it. I also removed the crib bumberpads too.

By Tonya on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 10:28 am:

I say lower it better safe than sorry.

By Kernkate on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 10:44 am:

Connor is almost 1 now, right?? I think it would be best to lower now. Before you know it he will be pulling himself up.

By Jelygu on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 10:45 am:

I lowered mine at about that age.

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 11:16 am:

Natalie is 11 mths tomorrow..we lowered hers at about 3mths ago, right after she started crawling, just to be safe. It's one notch from the lowest. She's cruising, but on our crib, it's still low enough.

By Tink on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 11:25 am:

I know I waited too long to lower my oldest dd's mattress. I dropped the other two kids' around nine months.

By Amecmom on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 02:27 pm:

I lowered my son's around that age and didn't bother to raise it for Helen. She's been sleeping with it in the lowest position since we put her in there.

I would lower it now, it can't hurt, right? I lowered mine when Fraser was getting around well and seemed like she was getting close to pulling herself up.

By Eve on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 03:07 pm:

I would lower it to the lowest setting as well. Also, don't forget to take the bumper pad out. Trina reminded me of that one! Little feet can use it to boost them up!:)

By Cat on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 04:26 pm:

Gosh, I think we lowered it at about 4-5 months. Robin was pulling himself up by about then. Then again, both my boys were out of their cribs before a year. Robin at 11mo because he climbed out (!!!) and Randy at 9 months because we moved and he never liked it anyway so we just left it (in storage--mility move overseas). Like's already been said--if there's any question/doubt go ahead and lower it and take the bumper out if you haven't already. :)

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 08:26 pm:

Mine both started standing before a year, so it was when they would be able to pull themselves up in the crib, that I lowered the mattress. I can't remember when it was, maybe about 7-9 months or so.

By Jackie on Friday, May 27, 2005 - 09:47 am:

We just lowered Faiths, a couple of weeks ago, to the lowest one. She now can pull herself up, so we knew it was time.

By Andi on Saturday, May 28, 2005 - 06:08 pm:

Taylor is the same age and we lowered her mattress to the lowest setting about 2 months ago.

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, May 28, 2005 - 06:53 pm:

We're going to lower it this weekend, but keep the bumper pads on. I tried taking them off and we had a LOOOONG night last night. Pacifiers kept falling through. Guess we've got to wean the pacifier soon?

By Tink on Saturday, May 28, 2005 - 07:31 pm:

The other option if paci-weaning isn't high on your list of priorities is a pacifier holder that clips onto his clothing to keep it close by. My youngest really needed her paci to sleep well and I had a few things that seemed more important to deal with at the time.

By Reds9298 on Saturday, May 28, 2005 - 09:45 pm:

I agree Tink...Natalie uses an attacher as well. It always comes off in the night, but she has two paci's in there and she can almost always find one on her own, and when she can't, she goes back to sleep anyway.
My little one is so mobile at night, head always into the sides, that I can't even imagine taking my bumpers off yet. I wonder when that day will come? Her crib converts to a toddler bed, and I imagine the bumpers still being on when we switch to that even! She's a squirmy little thing!

By Reds9298 on Saturday, May 28, 2005 - 09:47 pm:

Also, to echo Tink, we've decided that we should start thinking about getting off the paci at night (they never leave her crib, it's just a sleep-time thing), but we're going to focus on the bottle and formula weaning first. Once that's settled, then we'll concentrate on losing the paci at sleep times. Sometimes you just have to prioritize! :)

By Andi on Sunday, May 29, 2005 - 10:27 am:

Taylor still has her Binky and I have no plans on taking that from her anytime soon. I have about 8 in her crib so she can alwys find one and put herself back to sleep at night. DS had his until he was 2 1/2 and he never had a problem with speech. He started talking at 11 months and when he would try to say something I would teach him to take out the paci.
I will do the same with DD. She is already saying about 5 words and I have no concerns about her Paci getting in the way of her speech. JMO

I would also leave the bumper in the crib, if you lower the mattress and you still have a problem with him trying to climb out then I might think about removing it but until then I would leave it in.

Good luck. :)

By Mrsheidi on Sunday, May 29, 2005 - 04:32 pm:

Yeah, he is a tummy sleeper so I would feel bad putting a clip on him/his pacifier. Plus, he's been known to just rip it off. Not so sure I'm ready to give up the pacifier too...

By Lauram on Sunday, May 29, 2005 - 06:24 pm:

Lowered the crib at about 5 mo. Pacifier wasn't gone for ds #1 until almost 3 years old.... I remember keeping the bumper on for awhile- maybe until about 18mo.
