What sippy cup do you love best?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: What sippy cup do you love best?
By Mrsheidi on Sunday, May 15, 2005 - 01:17 pm:

I'm weaning Connor off the bottle, pretty much cold turkey and he's doing pretty well! We only have one sippy cup (spillproof), so I wanted to buy more. We've got "Avent Naturally" and it's pretty good so far.
Any suggestions?
And, where can I buy the ones you recommend?

By Rayanne on Sunday, May 15, 2005 - 04:06 pm:

I love the Playtex ones. They are very durable. I bought hers at Wal-Mart, Target, and Publix.

Nubby has some too, but two of hers have cracked when she tossed them on the ground and the nipple part is soft, so she learned to push it down on the ground and all the liquid comes out. Water is ok, but Milk in the carpet...yuck!!! It was good when she was leraning how to use one. I bought it at Target and Wal-Mart.

I love the Avent also. I like that the valve comes apart totally and can be cleaned thoroughly. I'm actually going to try Helen on a spillproof cup with a straw, rather than the sippy. Also, she's doing real well drinking from a regular cup!

Natalie uses the spill-proof straw cup that Ame mentioned. She loves it, it's easy, she doesn't spill anything. They are a little large, but she does just fine. Been using one of those for a couple of months. She always just wanted to chew on the sippy cups so I switched to these. Walmart, Kmart, really anywhere with baby supplies I think. We're about to start weaning off the bottle, too Heidi!

Any spill-proof cup would have been nice, when my kids were little! LOL! You guys are lucky!

My kids always used the Playtex ones and I really liked them the best out of all the ones I tried.

Hailey uses the Healthtex one with the round lid (more like a cup with a brim and some holes in it) and she has always used it. They say for 18 months+ but I started her on it from the beginning because I heard it was better for her teeth than the ones with the "spout".

Gerber, gerber, Gerber - the ones that are 2 colors and have a little white plug. They are the only ones I've found that don't leak.

We have the Nuby insulated ones which I like, they have a little cap for the mouthpiece, good for putting in a pack and carrying it. It doesn't have handles though, so it might not be a great starter. I also really like the Gerber Little Suzy's Zoo, it doesn't leak at all, and the valve is easy to take out and clean.

Choose one with a soft spout and don't them the substitute it for a bottle or mommy's nipple.

I made this mistake with ds when he stopped himself from nursing at nine months. He didn't get tooth decay however it did wear down his two top teeth. I'm pretty sure I bought Playtex with a stopper which could come out to be cleaned.

He also has a speech impediment to work on because he didn't receive quality sucking movements at this young age.

Annie...I'm not quite understanding your post...?? What caused the wearing down of his teeth and what does your first sentence mean? He's used the bottle until now...would that cause a speech impediment? He is "sucking" on his sippy cup spout and a pacifier.

By Heaventree on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 - 09:48 am:

We used the Avent sippy for awhile, but Matt had a hard time figuring out he had to tip the cup back to get the liquid out. He never used a bottle so I guess that's why. We just buy the Rubber Maid juice boxes now he loves them. I didn't like the Gerber cups as it seemed the hard plastic tip did work well for Matt either.

I have the nubby and I love them. We tried the Playtex but they were too hard and she didn't understand the concept of sucking from them but we are right now trying to upgrade to a hard sippy for the resons that Rayanne listed. She can now bite them and they leak everywhere and pushing them down to see stuff come out is fun for her.

By Amecmom on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 - 01:03 pm:

Not Annie, but I know there's been some research to suggest that sippy cup use can delay speech. Also, some kids chew on them and rub the spout against their teeth. Pam would know more.
My son used a sippy and has speech issues, but I really don't think they are related to the sippy.
His speech did begin to improve when we went to a staw though, which is why I'm going to try and start Helen on the spillproof straw cup.

I think we have had them all and personally, I liked the Playtex insulated ones. This is odd, but I also like the ones I picked up at the Dollar Tree one day when I left without a sippy and needed an emergency one. The picture on the outside wore off really fast in the dishwasher but otherwise, it has held up as well as the others. Easy to sip through, haven't had leak problems.

By Annie2 on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 - 10:04 pm:

Heidi, I made the mistake of letting ds "nurse" on the sippy cup. He didn't take it to bed but I allowed him to slowly suck at it to pacify himself in the car, while cuddling, reading a story, etc.
Because it was a hard plastic it wore down his two front teeth. They were not worn down to nubs but they had the look of someone who grinds their teeth at night.
I was also told because he stopped sucking from a nipple or bottle (the sippy cups drain into the mouth) at such a young age PLUS with his two top teeth worn down a bit, his tongue didn't get the workout it needed to fully develope for proper speech.

By Mrsheidi on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 09:48 am:

AAAhhh...gotcha, Annie. Makes sense.
I actually did go with the Avent ones that can hold more liquid. He's real good about drinking out of them and has to suck to get the liquid out.
Thanks, everyone!!
