2 part question

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: 2 part question
By Heaventree on Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 07:34 am:

Part 1: Last night I went into to Matt's room at about 10 pm to check on him before I went to bed, he was sound asleep, but it smelled like he had a dirty diaper (he's 13 months). I wanted to change him, but I didn't want to wake him up as I was pretty sure it would take him at least an hour to go back to sleep so I left him until this morning which I kind of felt bad about.

Q: Would you change him or leave him?

Part 2: I give him an 8 oz Rubber Maid juice box of water every day to drink and try to encourage him to drink water as often as possible throughout the day. He will usually only drink about 2 ozs. If I put 2 ozs of juice in the box and 6 ozs. of water he will drink the whole thing before 2 pm. Doctor says juice is unnecessary and that sweet is an acquired taste so be careful with the juice. Although I did not explain this senerio to him. Drinking all this water and juice has increased his BM's considerably, however they are often times very wet. He now has up to 3 or 4 BM's per day.

Q: Do you think this is too much or too often? Or is this a good thing? He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort and he doesn't have a rash on his bottom. I suppose that 2 oz of juice per day is not so bad especially if he is getting 6 oz of water, plus milk? What do you think?

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 07:39 am:

How long has he had increased and/or *wet* BM's? It is possible it has nothing to do with the juice. Of course, fruit juices *can* cause loose stools, and fruit or juices can also make you *go* more often. Is giving him juice a new thing?? If it is, that would explain it, or it could be from teething too.

1. I would change the diaper.
2. It sounds like the juice is increasing his bm's. I would encourage more water and milk, and less juice.

1. I would have changed him.
2. It could be the juice that is increasing the BM's.
Maybe try a different kind of juice and dilute it as you are doing now. Or as Jann said encourage more water and milk, and less juice. My kids always liked Juicy Juice and never had any problems. I know that some kids get BM's from Apple juice.

I agree that I would have changed him.

And I would day if his bm's changed when you started the juice, it is likely the reason. I would also cut back on it or try a different kind of juice.

I'm not sure if it's the juice that is increasing the BM's or just the added liquid to his diet. He is only getting 2 oz of juice and 6 oz of water. It's peach or pear juice by the way.

I guess I just thought that it was better to give 2 oz of juice and 6 oz of water rather than just 2 oz of water. I'm not sure how to get him to drink more water without adding the juice. We will try just water today and see what happens.

Thanks :)!

1. I would have changed him, also.

2. I'd cut the juice and see what happens. If his bowel movements become less frequent, you can be pretty sure it was the juice. If not, then it wasn't. You could also cut it to 1oz juice/5oz water and see if that helps. He might be more likely to drink it (with the little bit of flavor it adds). Another thing you could try is flavored water--but then again, he's aquiring that taste. My daycare kiddos get milk with meals and water between. Sometimes, not very often, I'll give them juice with snacks. Usually that's only the kids that are over 2 or 3, though. I have a 21mo I watch and I never give him juice. His mom says he doesn't like it anyway. Good luck and let us know what happens. :)

2oz of juice to 6oz of water is fine! Water is good for him to keep him well hydrated especially if he's going so often. You can try giving him som bannana and see if that helps slow him down.

Unless I was battling a rash, I would not have woken him to change him. After all, he might have been up for hours and then poop again after you put him back to bed.

I used to slather mty son's bottom well before putting him down for the night. This way if he did go, his skin would be protected.

Two ounces of juice is not only fine, it's good for him. If you were giving him the full 8 oz that would be different, but you're diluting it.
Maybe try a different juice? I never used any juice with sugar, and still don't.
At 13 months I would guess his food is often changing and increasing, which could very well be the reason his bm's are increasing.

I would have changed him, I can't even stand to let my Hailey go all night in a wet diaper (if she pees)

I would also offer more water it seems like he doesn't really care for the juice anyway, right? You could always try to just put a teaspoon of juice and the rest water just to add a little sweetess. Good Luck with the just water today! It will all work out. :)

By Kaye on Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 04:41 pm:

1. I woudl change him. Sitting in feces all night can really cause a sore bum!

2. My kids had juice as babies, they are fine. Now they don't drink any juice. I would change juice types to see if that is changing the bm's.

Maybe do a search on just how much liquid a child needs in their diet. In texas we need more because it is hot, but I wonder about other locations.

I would have changed him but I had kids that were super prone to horrid diaper rashes.

I would still go w/ the juice thing you have going but would try a different type of juice. I had one that would get horrible rashes on apple but was fine on white grape.

By Lauram on Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 08:01 pm:

2. If you think it's the juice, I'd cut it and see what happens. If the BMS keep up though, I would take him to the dr. We had lots of trouble with BMS with my first son and it ended up being lactose intolerance. There are poopy tests they might want to do- not fun- but sometimes a necessary evil.

1. I would have changed him- esp if he's going that frequently. Diaper rash is no picnic....

By Bclifton on Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 09:22 pm:

I completely sympathize with not changing him, especially if he slept through the night fine and had no rash. But you learn his tendencies by trying it out.

My DS had lots of loose stools around that age, too. I did two things-- changed back to soy milk (he only started whole milk at 12 months), which worked! And then when they started back for a while, I switched from apple to white grape juice, which also seemed to work. I water it down even more-- about 1/8th-- but now I'm not sure whether I'm glad I even started that habit. Even though he strictly got no sugar (except when daycare snuck him something now and then), he's got a nutty sweet tooth now. He'll drink water if he's really thirsty, but it's rare. Hydrated is good, but must juice be so darned sweet?

By Heaventree on Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 09:42 pm:

Well today went better, I dropped it down to 1 oz of juice and 7 oz of water. I think he just likes the flavour. We had a lot less BMs today.

I also noticed that he has a huge molar coming in so the BMs could be from teething. Why do the two go hand in hand? Does anyone know? He also has a small rash on his face.

I just can't wake him up. I went in today to check during his nap and he had a dirty diaper. What about never wake a sleeping baby?! It seems every time he falls asleep he dirties his diaper.

Anyway no rash so far, I'll keep an eye on it. Ame, thanks for the suggestion I'll put some diaper cream or vaseline on his bottom before bed.

Thanks everyone for your comments - very much appreciated.

By Annie2 on Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 10:12 pm:

Glad to hear he is doing better.

I'll go against the grain here and say I wouldn't wake him to change a soiled diaper. If it is not waking him up and he is not getting a rash, then I agree to let a sleeping baby sleep.

By Tink on Friday, May 6, 2005 - 12:47 am:

I also don't think I'd change the diaper, if it isn't causing any problems. I think it's better to give him a bit of juice (1-2 oz is NOT much juice) that is so watered down, than not have him hydrated enough.

BM's are looser because they are drooling more and swallowing more saliva. The acids in it tend to loosen everything up.
