Ds having problems with Prevacid

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Ds having problems with Prevacid
By Debbie on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 - 01:19 pm:

Has anyone else, whos dk is/was on prevacid, have problems with constipation?? Ds was doing so well for about 4-6 weeks on this medication. However, he has gradually had increasing problems with constipation. Now, the acid is coming back up and he is complaining of stomach aches again. So, his doctor switched him to Zantac and put him on Milalax for the constipation. He is just so miserable again. She said it could take a little while to get him back on track again. Has anyone else had this problem?

I just feel so bad for ds. It just seems like it is one thing after another with him.

My DS who is 10 is on prevacid for Gastritis, and has no problems with it. Has really helped him alot.
Do you think its the prevacid causing the constipation??? Or could it be something else??
Hope your DS is feeling better soon.

Kathy, it is the only thing we can think of. He hasn't had any changes in his diet, etc and he has never been constipated like this before. Oh well, we will see what happens.

I take prevacid, and it doesn't cause constipation for me at all.
Zantac doesn't work as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes more acidic.
Mirilax is very popular, and I'm sure it'll do the trick.

Well, Randy has had trouble with constipation on and off since he was born. But, he'd been going just fine until we put him on the Prevacid.

The Prevacid has been great for his reflux, but he's been a bit stopped up lately. I really think it's something other than the Prevacid, though. Even if it is the Prevacid, we'll stay on it because it's so good!

We're doing a combo of prune juice, apple juice water and Benefiber every morning, which seems to be helping. If he goes a little long betweeen movements, I give him Kondremul, which he loves.
Kondremul works really well - better than Mirilax for my kids.

He has been on the Zantac for two days, and it already seems to be helping. He said that the acid stopped coming up yesterday and he had a BM with no trouble. I just hope the Zantac continues to work. I know it is not as strong as the Prevacid. I did a search online and constipation is one of the side effects of Prevacid!

I hope he continues doing well. Everyone is different when it comes to medications.

Debbie,
Both Zantac and Prevacid can cause either constipation or diarhea, it just depends on how the person reacts to it.

I'm glad he's doing better, but is the Zantac going to be enough to heal the lesions? What does the doc think?

Ame

Ame, his GI doc. said it should only take about 2 months to heal the lesions. He was on the Prevacid for 2-1/2 months. So, they should be healed or close to it. She put him on the Zantac because it isn't as strong and the Prevacid seems to be too much for his system to handle. Zantac also promotes healing, so it shouldn't effect that. I just hope it is strong enough to control the reflux.
