1st birthday toy ideas?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: 1st birthday toy ideas?
By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 - 10:27 am:

Our little Bubba is turning 1 on June 30th...can you believe it?
Family (ok, my Italian over-zealous family) is asking for ideas. I wanted to make an online "wish-list" for birthday toys. And, it doesn't even have to be a toy...any ideas? I'm a teacher, so learning toys and books are my favorite too.
What did your baby love when they turned 1?

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 - 11:03 am:

Heidi- Natalie will be one on the 26th of June, and these are some of the things on her list: (almost all Fisher-Price, we're nuts about their stuff!)
FP Incrediblock (she has a ton of peek-a-blocks already and this is really cool!)
FP Learning Home
FP Little People Bus
Magna Doodle
FP Baby Baseball
more board books (as if we don't have enough already, but I don't think you can overdo it on the books!)
We also had a toolbench and a rollarounds toy that she just got recently so we took them off the list. There's also a FP riding toy that we're going to get her...can be pushed or ridden independently, but can't remember the name of it. Check out the Fisher-Price website...you can search by age range/category and see lots of cool things. Most have online demos, too. Hope that helps a little!!!

Fisher-Price Little People ANYTHING! House, bus, farm, car wash, airport, fun park, anything! My kids LOVED the Little People and played with them constantly. They are perfect for little hands!

Also, ride on toys, toy lawn mower

My son has the Intellitable that he got when he was 1, he loved it then.

Of course books, books, books are great too!

Ditto the Little People products. All three of my kids played with them for years. My three year old still loves them. A sand-and-water table is a lot of fun for this age, also, although it requires a lot of supervision and clean-up!

Natalie also has the little people farm (a hand-me-down) and loves it!

Whoever has the moxie to just go down to the local furniture store and pick up some cardboard fridge and stoves boxes and let that be their gift...They'll be your one year old's hero. :)

unschoolmom - you're sooo right! Natalie has 2 big boxes right now. I know guests think we're nuts, but she loooves them!

DS loved his activity table, it gives him a chance to stand and play at the same time. He also liked the See and Say. You point the arrow at the appropriate animal and pull the handle and it says "The cow says Moo". Remember we had them as kids but they had a pull string instead?

He also got a little bike/truck without pedals. He can use it to help him walk and now he sits on it and races around the house. At first he could only go backwards, he would run into the wall and cry. It took him about 2 weeks to figure out how to go frontwards.

Weebles Wabble - he loves the music.

Check out my post of early March. I posted the same question and got a lot of great ideas.

Oh yeah I bought him a tiny tikes piano, I play Twinkle, Twinkle on it for him, he loves it! And Alphabet Fridge Magnets, if you don't mind picking them up off the floor about a hundred times day.

Ditto little people, I got my boys most of the sets and had my family get them too for Christmas and they play with it all the time.

Thanks everyone! SUCH good ideas!!!

WE bought a playhouse for my dd 1st birthday, took down our breakfast table and gave her a playroom. It was great. My son i think got a work bench, not used as much. What about duplos? Some balls, big ones, small ones. And mine loved bathtub toys at this age too!

If you don't want your house to turn into a parking garage, I'd warn relatives against too many riding and/or pushing toys. I'm a teacher, too, and my DS still plays with FP "Wheels on the Bus," Leap Frog table (but NOT the learning pad thingy), FP barn, a dollhouse, and anything with doors and compartments, balls, books, balls, books; can't have too many balls or books. A ball pit for outside and any water toys would be great for any summertime birthday.
