Getting frustrated re; headaches

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Getting frustrated re; headaches
By Cat on Monday, May 2, 2005 - 05:39 pm:

I posted a while back about Randy having headaches and being on his second round of antibiotics. Well that one didn't work so they switched him to a z-pack and it didn't do any good, either. Doc ordered a CT of head and sinuses last week and we had it done last Friday. I just talked to the doc a little while ago and they only did the sinus CT, not the head! So instead of ordering another head CT the doc went ahead and ordered an MRI. That's scheduled for next Wednesday afternoon. Randy's been having headaches for almost 6 weeks now. Never terrible and they don't slow him down much, but he still complains several times a day his head hurts. We've been giving him Advil (doc said to give it as a preventive at this point--every 6-8 hours whether his head hurts or not) and it doesn't make much difference. The doc said he's not terribly concerned because Randy does well with all the neurological exams and seems to be doing well--other than his head hurts. The doc does want to find out what's going on, though, and even suggested seeing another doc to get a "fresh perspective" on things. Well we already saw someone else! She's the one that told us to stop giving him sudafed because it can cause headaches and that if they continued they'd order a CT. BTDT now! The doc did say the sinuses look perfect. There's nothing there that would explain what's going on. So now we wait--again. I'm tempted to put him on a low carb diet to see it that helps. I know when I was on low carbs I had a lot less headaches than I normally do (mine are usually weather related/migraine). I don't know what else to try at this point. :(

Poor kid. :( I hope that you guys can figure this out soon. Have they checked his vision? If he is straining to see this may cause chronic headache. If he wears glasses maybe his glasses are too strong.

Oh, Cat, how frustrating! I hope you figure this out soon. Chronic, even low-grade, pain is so stressful and having one of our kids in pain leaves moms feeling helpless. I'm so sorry.

I know you want to stay away from the meds if possible but Excedrin tension headache really helps allot. I have had headaches going on 2 months straight now and have no insurance so the Dr is out for me. Those work wonders. And since I could take them when I was pregnant I am sure they must be OK for kids of Randy's age.

Let us know what the test results show. I am sorry he is having trouble. :( Hope he feels better soon.

That is so true. My head kills me when my vision is off. When my glasses are not right.

I don't think you can give kids asperin. Is may cause reyes disease. I think exedrin might have asperin in it.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. I am too busy to research it right now.

you can't give kids asperin or pepto bismol too... My sister in law warned me about that... Contains asperin.

No experience- but hugs! :) Hope you figure it out soon....

His eyes are fine. He saw the eye doc in November and the ped checked his vision last week. His vision is better than 20/20. Fiona, you're right, Exedrin does have asprin in it and no, kids can't take it. My brother had Reyes syndronm when he was in high school. Very scary. I'll let you all know what we find out after the MRI. The ped probably won't get the results and call me until next Friday. We are pushing him to drink more water and I think I am going to start giving him more protien. Thanx for all the hugs.
