Potty talk

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Potty talk

My son peed in the potty for the first time today!! Funny, because we didn't even consider training as early as 18 months, but the pediatrician said buying a potty would be a good idea. He LOVES to sit on it when we're on the big potty. I started putting pull-ups on him, and today, DH explained the procedure to him with demo (sitting down, tho), and DS did the same thing, with a grunt for emphasis!!

I'm proud of him, even though I know this may be a fluke. Any pointers on keeping up the trend? Isn't he too young to "get" it? He already announces "kaka" whenever he poops, but doesn't seem to be aware of peeing.

Just don't push him. We introduced the potty at a year for my ds, he is 3 & still not there yet. I am thinking it will never happen. LOL

Just continue to praise and encourage, but also remember to chill about it. It will happen and you will know when it is time to push.

Many boys are trained late, but some are trained early, follow his lead and don't get discouraged.

Ditto again! My kids were introduced casually to the potty around 18 months, and really started using it consistantly around 2 years. Originally Maddie was training faster than Shane, but she had a setback with a broken leg. Shane really started being consistant when we taught him to go standing up, it was the "incentive" he needed. They'll be 3 next month and are pretty much day trained, though Maddie has accidents when she waits too long. Good luck!! Oh, and I swear by the Potty Power DVD. Since I needed one that was for both genders, they adore it, and the "Baby or Big Kid" game in the beginning really encouraged them!!
