Front tooth knocked out!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Front tooth knocked out!
By Mara on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 12:24 pm:

Yesterday my 5 year old ds got his front tooth knocked out accidentally by the neighbor kid. Ds walked in front of the swing and got hit by the other kid. Anyhoo, it was a baby tooth. He is'nt complaining today and the tooth came out in one piece. Can this damage his permanate tooth that is under the gums? I figure that it was going to come out soon anyways with him being 5, but having it knocked out, can that cause any damage?

I did a google search and ound this: "It's best to alert your dentist, however, because if the permanent tooth is years away from making its appearance, your child may need a spacer to keep the rest of the teeth from shifting out of place." Other than that, it should be fine.

I would also say take him to the dentist, if only to make sure there was no damage to the bud of the adult tooth. Lots of kids get their baby teeth knocked out and are fine, but better safe than sorry! Big hugs to your DS, it sounds like he's being a trooper about it!

Definitely take him to the dentist. My youngest did this, and had to have a "space maintainer" until the permanent tooth came in so the baby teeth wouldn't shift and cause it to come in funny.
