Carseat Question (Yes you, Trina) :)

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Carseat Question (Yes you, Trina) :)

I had the mother of the boy i'm watching leave his carseat today since we go to playgroup on Thursdays. She has an Evenflo Scout but it's manufactured date was in 1997!!! Just a bit expired! The chest clip has a crack in it and the straps are all tangled and worn. He does NOT need to be in this seat but i'm not sure how to tell her when she picks him up. Do all P.D. carseat safety checks give out free seats to those who cant afford another? (They did that recently here, only if I would have known then.) She basically lives paycheck by paycheck and i'm really tempted to take what she pays me this week to buy this boy a new carseat. But that would defeat the purpose of me watching him to begin with. Do you have any info or resources on how someone could help her get a new seat?

I'm on my way out the door. How old is her son and how much does he weigh? I'll look into this more later. You're right, his current seat HAS TO GO!

He is 27 months old and weighs about 32 pounds. Sorry, that info would have helped. :)

Most departments/organizations, etc. that do car seat inspections will have car seats on hand for such cases (expired/recalled car seats, etc.). I have no idea how it's handled in your area but my Instructors (who run car seat check events), although greatly appreciate donations, will give car seats to needy families.

She could also pick up a reasonably priced combination seat, like the Evenflo Chase or Graco Cargo ($60-80). There are different versions. Be sure to get one with a front harness adjuster.

I went by the CHP office and talked to the CPS tech there and he gave me his info to have her call so he can get her a new carseat. :) Thanks Trina!

Great news, Melissa! :) Do you think the mom will call? I hope so!

Trina, I don't think she'd call if I just told her "Your carseat is not safe, try to get a new one" but since I took the initiative to find her a resource to get a potentially *free* one, she just may do it. I really hope so because I just cringe everytime I see what he's in now.
