Shopping Cart Covers

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Shopping Cart Covers
By Heaventree on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 - 09:19 pm:

Does anyone use one? What should I look for? I have a 1 year old and am expecting another in September, I think my grocery store has double seats on the shopping cart. Should I order a double? Do you have a prefered supplier?

I can't find them in Canada so I will have to order on-line, has anyone ordered on-line?

A friend is making a trip to the US this weekend are there any department stores that carry them?

What is a reasonable price, I've seen anywhere from $29 to $59?

TIA!

I just bought one online and I love it! They are not cheap but wonderful! Mine was actually $42 with S&H and I chose the fabric. This is where mine came from - it's a great, informative site, is very well made, and easy to use. I'm looking at the receipt...it was $34.99 before S&H. There are tons of fabrics to choose from. You can also order the pattern on ebay for about $10, but I'm not a sewer and felt that I would spend just as much on the supplies and still mess it up! I've never seen them in dept. stores. There is a cheapo vinyl cover that babiesrus carries, but it mostly protects the front handle, not the germs on the entire seat. I think those are like $25. This cover from Allison (she makes them, out of Texas I think, a SAHM) is really comfy and sooo cute!

I got mine at a craft fair. I loved it. Kept my baby from chewing on those nasty handles when she was little. And every time I put her in the cart she went straight for the handle to gnaw on it. I probably used it about a year unitl she stopped wanting to chew on everything in sight.

Babys R Us has one. That is where I got mine. I love it!!! I wash it once a week, and it still is in perfect condition. I have been using it since Rylee was 6 months old and now she is 16 months old.

I wouldn't order a double, two singles give you more flexiblity.

Not needing one, curiosity got the best of me and I checked out the site. The shopping seat covers look great. :) BUT, Trina (did I get your attention??? ), correct me if I'm wrong, but don't car seat companies recommend you NOT use any type of cover on car seats that's not made by their companies because they're not safe? Not that anyone was looking for one anyway (that they posted). Just thought I'd heard that somewhere.

Cat is correct. Shopping cart covers are great but custom car seat covers of any kind are NOT recommended, and in fact, may cause the car seat manufacturer to void their warranty.

Just wondering...why would you use one on a carseat? Guess I don't get it!:)

Deanna, I often wondered that myself. LOL! I've seen tons of custom made car seat covers online in cutesy fabrics. Apparently that's what the parents are after. However, these custom made covers have not been tested and aren't flame retardant.

I used a car seat cover with my dd, because the hospital gave out free seats when you had a baby. The catch is it is the same seat by century you see attached to shopping carts. Sowith the plastic vinyl the seat would get hot if it was left in the car, or really sweaty under her. So I made a cover that basically was like laying a cloth diaper in there with holes for the straps to go through. I honestly never thought of it as a safety issue (and not sure I do now actually). 10 years ago car seats were very different, now we have lots of color choices, fabrics, handles etc, but when I was having my first you got that mint green or blue and there weren't alot of options.

oooohhhh, get it. I guess I don't care what the carseat looks like as long as it works! LOL :)
