Please send me good vibes

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Please send me good vibes

You guys have been so great, please send me some positive vibes. My DD has had vertigo since Feb. and has to go for an MRI on Tues. Very strange, she started in the beginning of Feb. with a headcold, and it turned into a constant dizziness. Her pediatrician says her ears look clear. Blood test and urine tests are normal. Meanwhile, my DS woke up this morning with a bad cough and fever. Gave him Motrin, and he just threw it up. So I guess I'll be fighting the fever all day. I just want everyone to be healthy. This winter has been so tough on everyone.

I know this sounds weird, but I'm trying to coordinate a sitter for when I have to take my daughter in for the MRI and to see the neurolgist.

How long do you think this cough/fever/vomitting with my son will last? I know it is a tough one, but if anyone out there has had something like this can you give me a clue? I'm hoping it's a 24 hour thing.

I don't want to leave him with a sitter when he's sick, but I want to be with my daughter when she gets the MRI (my DH will be there, but I want to be there too). The MRI is on Tuesday. Think this cough/fever/vomitting will be over by then?

Yikes! Depends on what's causing it. If it's viral, odds are he'll be over it.

You've got your hands full. Good luck this week. Let us know about the MRI.

Hey, this may help. I had major problems with vertigo a couple of years ago, and also had to go for an MRI to "rule out a possible brain tumor". Turns out the vertigo was caused by an ear infection which had cleared up, from an infection point of view, but which left me with the after effects of vertigo. I took medication for the vertigo for a couple of months, and have had no problems since.

Lots of good vibes coming your way! Hope all is well with both of your dk's!

Wishing you well in all areas. Hope they both feel better soon.

Thanks much for your positive thoughts. Yes, Ginny, that's what I'm worried about with the MRI. I don't even want to think about it. I do think it is a remnant of some sort of virus. She has no fever, just a fairly constant dizziness. She was throwing up in the morning, but the Pediatrician gave her an strong antihistamine, and that seemed to control the nausea. Her dizziness seems to be diminshing. So I'm hoping that it is something with the inner ear.

As for my son, I think he has the flu. His throat is very sore, and he is complaining of a headache. I don't think it is strep, because he has congestion.

Anyways, I made it through another day. Thank goodness the kids are off school for the next few weeks for spring break. I hope the rest will heal everyone.

UGH, sounds like it *could* be the flu. I hope he is better by tomorrow.

I was thinking along the same lines as Ginny, an inner ear infection could cause the symptoms your DD is having.

I worked with a guy a few years ago who had the exact same problem. He went to several different doctors and neurologists, had numerous tests, and an ENT put him on long term antibiotics and antihistamines, and it finally cleared up.

Hopefully that is all you are facing with your DD. Be sure to let us know!

I'm sending healthy vibes your way too!!

Well, she had her MRI, but they couldn't see anything because she has braces. However, this is day 6 of her not being dizzy. I'm hoping that it was a virus. The doctor for some reason thought it could be migraines.

Can migraines cause dizziness and nausea? It was the most severe in the morning, and tapered off in the afternoon usually after she had a nap.

Well, I do believe that your positive thoughts helped alot, and I would like to thank-you. I don't feel as distraught as before.

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 - 08:45 am:

Yes, migraines can. There are actually different types of migraines, though, if I'm not mistaken, most cause severe pain - I know the ones I get surely do!

If the symptoms tapered off in the afternoon, could that have anything to do with the time of day she was taking the antihistamine???? Like, if she took it early in the day, then several hours later she would be feeling better?

I guess in this case *no news is good news* - you may want to have her thoroughly checked out by an ENT.

I was also going to ask about meds. I had severe vertigo when I was about 18 or 19. I went through so many tests! It was the birth control pills I was on. I didn't find that out until I stopped taking then years later. It was a horrible experience! Maybe you could try a different one?
