Don't know if I should take DD in

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Don't know if I should take DD in
By Boxzgrl on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 07:44 pm:

For the last 4-5 days she's had diarrhea. She's still eating and drinking fine. Active, no temperature and completely normal. She normally has a BM once a day... maybe twice every so often. Since shes had the diarrhea, shes been going 4-5 times a day. I'm kind of concerned about her getting dehydrated but shes drinking well. And today, the last 2-3 BM's shes had, she seems like shes in pain. She gets scared right before she goes and cries while she going and cries even more when I change her diaper. She doesnt have diaper rash so i'm wondering if shes maybe sore inside from so many BM's a day?

I called the nurse advice line 2 times today and both times they told me just to watch her and make sure shes getting plenty of fluids, no milk and if she doesnt clear up in another 24 hours to bring her in. I would probably bring her in now just to make me feel better since shes seems to be in a little pain when having a BM but her dr. is closed and the ER here on base is at least a 4-6 hour wait.

Any advice? I have no clue what to do. I think she'll be fine but it worries me that shes seems to have pain/discomfort when having a BM.

Has she had more fruit and/or juice than usual lately? Have you tried any new foods? Since she's acting normal, has no fever and is eating/drinking/sleeping OK I don't think there a rush to go to the doctor. She could be scared and/or crying from the cramps brought on by BMs. Continue to keep an eye on her and listen to your mommy instincts.

My son used to get cramps and diarrhea as a toddler for no apparent reason. I finally realized he had a sensitivity to fruit/juice. Once I started to monitor and limit intake he was fine.

By My2cuties on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 07:58 pm:

As long as she is wetting plenty she should be fine, also I would give her some pedialyte or my pediatrician told me watered down gatorade is just as good too. I am sure she is just hurting because of soo many episodes of the diarrhea. Don't worry, everything will be fine. Of course if you see blood in her stool then take her in but other than that she should be fine. ((((hugs)))).

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 07:59 pm:

And....as long as she is urinating, she is not really dehydrated. Have you tried Pedialyte?

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 08:11 pm:

I've been giving her Gatorade and Apple Juice all day. I guess on a more funny note, I can't stand not giving her milk and pumping her full of juice, lol. :) I will continue to watch her. I just feel so bad and i've never had her go with diarrhea for this long. Maybe i'll just make her a really starchy dinner to help smooth things along? My poor baby. Another thing to push away any interest in potty training. :)

Thanks, you girls made me feel better. I think I was almost freaking out to the point of wondering if maybe she swallowed something that was stuck "down there".... ahhhhh, long day. When's bedtime? :)

By Heaventree on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 08:22 pm:

Apple juice may be making the diarrhea worse. Will she drink Cranberry? It's not very sweet, but it won't give her diarrhea. Also perhaps giving her some banana or cheese might help as well. Good luck and keep us posted.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 08:25 pm:

So no apple.... what about orange, pineapple or white grape? Those are the only ones I have right now. I can't get her to drink cranberry juice, I think its a bit tart tasting for her. Though I do have Cran-Grape... maybe she'll try that.

{{{Melissa}}} It's so hard to see our little ones hurting when we don't know what to do to help them. Our pediatrician let me give Bella a little Pepto last year when she was sick. You may ask the on-call nurse if that is an option for Kaitlyn. I'd stick to the Gatorade since almost all juices can cause diarrhea. I hope she's feeling better in the morning.

BTW, bedtime is only a couple of hours away. *wink* I know the feeling.

By Breann on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 08:45 pm:

Ditto the apple juice. That will most likely make the situation worse.
Lots of water and pedialite would be my recommendation. Though, I'm not a doctor :)

By Missmudd on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 08:47 pm:

My advice would be to stop juice entirely until the diahrea clears up. I think it is doing more harm than good. Try her on just pedialyte and see how things go.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 08:55 pm:

Okay, so i'll just take away juice all together and just give her "ice water" (by request, lol) until the morning when I can buy some Pedialyte. Thanks!

By Reds9298 on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 09:06 pm:

What about just lemon water to sweeten the water a bit?

By Amecmom on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 09:34 pm:

Hugs Melissa! She could be sore from so much going. Get her some Anusol and use it on her - not the extra strength, but the regular one. My son's gastro told me to use it on him when he was very constipated - different symptom, but the same result - a sore bottom.

Hope she feels better!

Ame

Hugs sweetie. I would just give her pedialyte or water. Grape juice makes you poop too. So stay away from the aplle juice and grape juice. One thing that makes Rylee feel better if she has diarreah, is a frozen popsicle. It's actually frozen pedialyte, that I did by myself. Your DD might like that too. I hope she feels better soon.

By Dana on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 10:34 pm:

I agree with all the others. I would not do juice at all.

Just curious, why is she having to drink juice in the first place?

By Andi on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 10:53 pm:

No apple Juice, that could easily be causing it but apple sauce is fine, not sure why that is but it works. Bananas are also great for diarrhea.
Hope she starts feeling better soon.

By Feona on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 08:05 am:

too much apple Juice causes diarhea. I would take her in when the doctor is in...

By Feona on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 08:06 am:

Actually all juice gives you diarhea... (too much of it anyway)

By Vicki on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 08:15 am:

The BRAT diet is great for diarrhea. Bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast! Plain toast, nothing on it. I also would stop the juice and give her extra of the brat diet items and see if that helps.

By Kittycat_26 on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 08:16 am:

melissa, if you don't have pediatlyte in the future there is something else that will work. Take a box of jello and mix it to almost a gallon of water. It flavors the water without any of the sweetner in thing like Crystal lite. It also can be made with sugar free and then you don't have to worry about pumping her full of sugar.

Just a thought that my mom passed on to me. Plus it is sooooooooooo much cheaper than even generic pedialyte.

By Jann on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 08:50 am:

Yep, BRAT diet is the best.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 09:25 am:

Just a side note - orange juice is very acidic and will cause nausea and diarrhea in some circumstances. Definitely avoid the juices right now.

How is she this morning? Are you taking her in?

By My2cuties on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:21 am:

Yes, how is she this morning? Any better?

By Boxzgrl on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:26 am:

Well no BM yet so I guess i'll wait and see. Thanks for asking. :)

By Rayanne on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 11:31 am:

I hope she is feeling better too.
Maybe it was a stomach bug.

By Boxzgrl on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 11:47 am:

Yay, DD had a BM and while it was still pretty runny, there was some hard stuff in there. Oh, the things that make a mommy's day!!! :)

By Dawnk777 on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 11:51 pm:

Melissa, you should see us discussing doggie doo-doo on the dog board I'm on! LOL! Dog-owners get excited about poop, too!

By Rayanne on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 08:35 am:

LOL. I'm glad things are better.

By My2cuties on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 10:03 am:

glad things are starting to look solid..lol :)

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 10:26 am:

Before you had kids did you ever think you would be so concerned and/or worried about poop?! Awww, the joys of motherhood! LOL!

By Meltonmom on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 02:20 pm:

My precious DD had a bout with this recently. After four days I took her to the doc. who ordered a speciman!! The doc. gives me a small container and says next time my four year old DD has a runny BM ask her to poop some in this (ummm...yeah....okay) fortunately The Lord heard my prayer and just as it was time to get the sample, the runny BMs cleared up and the next day it was over.....but it was a long bout with runny BMs....glad to hear your child is feeling better.
