Eating after a stomach bug

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Eating after a stomach bug
By Vicki on Monday, February 21, 2005 - 06:03 pm:

Dd had a stomach bug last week. It started during the wee hours of Wednesday morning. She stopped all symptoms of it by late Thursday afternoon. However, we seem to have a new problem. I can't get her back to eating normal. You know how after you eat light or don't eat at all your stomach is empty, so everytime that you do eat, it starts to girgle and all of that? I think this is freaking her out that she is going to get sick again! I have explained to her time and time again why it is happening etc., but she still is not eating good at all. She is NEVER hungry. I have started just making her meals and that is when she eats, but never says she is hungry. I would say that I would be lucky if she is eating half of what used tobe normal for her. Could something else be wrong? She is to go back to school tomorrow (they were off Friday and today) and I am worried about that! What can I do or is this completely normal? How long until normal eating resumes??

I would assume that, because she was sick, her stomach has shrunk a bit. Between that and the fear of getting sick, she may not be eating as much as she used to. It's only really been a few days since she stopped feeling better. As long as what she is eating is healthy and she is getting plenty of fluids, I'd give her a few more days to get back to normal. I'm glad she's feeling better.

Ok, I guess I just have to have something to worry about. LOL

Don't push it, she may have stopped vomiting, but she may still not feel the greatest. I know when I've had a stomach bug I don't feel like eating for days. And with dd when she gets like that, I let her eat anything and I mean anything she wants just to get her to eating again. I don't care if it's cookies and soda as long as she eats something. It always passes and she gets back to eating normally. But I'm like you, it worries me to death.

DD just got over a bug not too long ago. She didn't eat for quite a while! I was worried, but our Dr. said to just keep up with the clear liquids and not worry about food. She did lose a good 6 lbs, but slowly she is gaining it back and eating normally now. I would just keep her hydrated for now and her appetite will come back. Hang in there!

Well thanks ladies. She is a tiny little thing anyway, (weight, not heighth) so when she doesn't eat, it worries me to death. I have let it become a struggle between us and I think I might need to lay off for a bit longer.

My ds had the flu last week. He was feeling better by Sat., but still is not eating what he normally does. After a bad stomach bug, it can take awhile to get old eating habits back. I wouldn't worry too much, just make sure she is getting plenty of fluids.

Ditto everyone else. Your body can sustain itself for a little while without solid foods, but fluids are what is most important.

We had the same thing here a couple of weeks ago. It took exactly a week for her to get her appetite back and I haven't stopped feeding her since! She's always hungry. It's the first time I experienced the lack of appetite for that long. Usually it just take a couple of days before mine are back to eating. Must be another weird virus!

Ditto. Of my 3 kids, one of them will go back to eating after 3-4 days, one waits almost a week, if not longer before he is back to normal. Wouldn't you guess it happens to be my two small kids. The middle kid (the big one), he is like me, throwing up makes him hungry. We both eat very very soon afterwards. My hubby thinks I am insane, but something about being sick makes me crave very certain foods and NOW.

You guys have no idea how much better your making me feel. LOL Just before getting her shoes on this morning, she told me she didn't want to go to school...then it was that she wanted me to take her to school, not ride the bus. I am telling you, this thing has really freaked her out. I could tell she was so nervous about going back today. Tonight will be exactly one week since since she got it, so I know she is over it! She is just terrified that she is going to get sick again. This is the same little girl that NEVER wants to miss any school and will ride the bus home even if I am at the school at the end of the day! I felt so bad putting her on that bus this morning knowing she was so nervous, but I think if I would have taken her, it would have just prolonged everything. I am really hoping that she will be fine at school today and realize that she is better and everything is fine. As the bus was coming down the road, she looked at me and I said "you are fine" and she just gave me this grin. I amaze her that I know what she is thinking. LOL Oh boy, if it isn't one thing it is another!! But thanks again. I feel so much better knowing she isn't the only one that takes this long to get back to normal..
