Need Adoption Book Recommendations for Toddlers/Preschoolers

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Need Adoption Book Recommendations for Toddlers/Preschoolers

Both of my sisters adopted American newborns. The babies are approaching one and two years of age and I was hoping some of you would know some great, simple books I could get for them. I'd like to just add them to their collection of books and have them casually get read to them just like books about bunnies and ducks and toys, etc. Anyone know of any books like that? Board books, especially, would be great. But nothing heavy handed or too complicated. Just having a book that includes the words adoption or birth mother and such would be a start and would become familiar words to them. I mention they were adopted as newborns and from America as I know there are lots of books about babies being adopted as older babies from foreign countries and these books usually include the parents coming to meet the baby and taking the baby home on an airplane, and how the baby looks different from its family, etc. None of that would really apply here.

TIA!

Are they telling their children that they are adopted right from the start? (Just didn't want to see what happened in the "Friends" episode where Monica and Chandler tell a child he's adopted and the parents hadn't told their child yet.)

You have a great idea though!! I hope they tell their child as early as possible. The book is a great way to do that.

Yes, they will be told from the beginning, but of course the 10 month old is too young and the 22 month old is just now approaching the age where I thought introducing books on the topic mixed amongst the other books he has would just be an easy way to incorporate the subject and have the topic just always have been part of his existence.

I don't know of any books but what a great idea! The Coast Guard is going to let me take some college classes for free and I am going to take a lot of classes that will help me eventually work at an adoption agency. I would love to work with adoptions. I watch Adoption Stories every day on the Discovery Health Channel. I cry just about every day watching it. That show is what has made me want to work with adoptions. Hopefully I will adopt one of my own even though I am able to make children:) I just think adoption is a wonderful thing.

Wow, I have so many, including the ones listed above. I'll have to look for them, because I can't remember all of the names. The one that really sticks out is "Did My First Mother Love Me?" It's a great book, for geared for kids a bit older than that. I think Nicole read it when she was about 9, and it really sunk in, even though I'd read it to her many times before.
I don't think we have any board books.
I used to go to Chapters and just look through all of their adoption books, and buy what looked good.
Oh, there's one with Mr. Rogers, and there's a Sesame St. book where one of the characters adopts.
If I think of more, I'll post them for you.
