Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Potty Training? Help!

My daughter is 14 months. I have not started potty training yet. I thought it was still too early but my mother was shocked that I had not started...Any suggestions. When did you guys start and how???

Let your child be your guide...not your mother.
My 1st was not fully potty trained until she was close to 2 and my 2nd is starting now at 19 months and doing well.
Start buy buying a potty chair or taking her to the bathroom with you, that is what I did with both of mine. Good Luck. :)

Things have changed quite a bit concerning potty training since your mother raised her kids. I agree with My2cuties. Let your child be your guide... not your mother.

A good article here:

Toilet Training Readiness Checklist

I think a generation ago, potty training was more about training the mom to ask the child every hour if the child had to go. My oldest was potty trained completely right at 2yo. My ds (who has autism) was potty trained at 3 1/2 and my youngest was potty trained around 20 months. I thought my youngest trained very early because she is very particular about messes and being dirty. Definitely, follow your dd's lead. I'd keep a potty chair in the bathroom that she can sit on while you are nearby. I know of several children that weren't potty trained until they were three or even four. You have plenty of time.
