STINKY!!!!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: STINKY!!!!
By Rayanne on Sunday, December 26, 2004 - 12:33 pm:

Rylee's room always stinks because of her diapers. I change her Diaper Champ abot every 4 days. Is there something I can use to make my little girls room smell nice? I feel so horrible and I am emberassed whenever someone walks in and makes a face. I spray her Diaper Champ and it has a top that flips back and forth and it is supposed to keep the smell in, but it doesn not work.
Diaper Champ

Neutra-Air spray?? That eliminates smells pretty well. Try sprinkling some baking soda in the bottom of the diaper thing. Keep you plastic bags from the grocery and put all used diapers in one, tie it up before throwing it away. I never used a diaper Genie or anything like that, I always just put diapers in the trash, because that would usually go out so frequently.

By Annie2 on Sunday, December 26, 2004 - 03:18 pm:

I had a diaper genie for a while but always thought it stunk up the room and was a pain. I to reverted back to using grocery bags to wrap up soiled diapers and placing them in the outside trash bin as soon as possible.

By Amy~moderator on Sunday, December 26, 2004 - 04:55 pm:

I agree - I never used Diaper pails for any of my 3 boys. I just found it easier to throw them in the trash. Same reason as Crystal - the trash goes out at least twice a day here. The stinky ones I tie up in a grocery bag and put in the outside trash bin immediately.

So...my only advice is to get rid of the Diaper Champ, lol

I used a Diaper Genie with my 1st , but then I decided it was too much trouble and it didn't work well at all. Now I buy these blue scented bags from Sassy, they are just the right size for diapers. They work really good. Other than that, Lysol is what I had to spray in dd's room everyday, before I got rid of the Genie. :) Good Luck

By Jackie on Sunday, December 26, 2004 - 05:27 pm:

Being on my 3rd baby, I have never used a diaper genie. I hated the thought of those poopy diapers just sitting in there until thrown away. We also just put the dirty diapers in a Walmart bag, and right out to the trash. Ok, if we were too lazy to walk to the trash can, they just got thrown on the front porch, but at least they were out of the house :)

By Tink on Sunday, December 26, 2004 - 06:16 pm:

I'm with everyone else on this...toss the Diaper Champ. I had a Genie with my first, used it because I thought I was supposed to, tried it out about 3 times with my ds and decided it was a waste of time, money, space and that it could qualilfy as air pollution so it got thrown out. It was much easier to toss them in our big garbage can outside.

By Imamommyx4 on Sunday, December 26, 2004 - 09:51 pm:

It seems like everybody I know has used a diaper genie and nobody likes the things. How on earth do they keep selling them?

By Rayanne on Sunday, December 26, 2004 - 10:26 pm:

Thank you everyone. I hink that I am going to have to start saving my grocery bags.:)

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, December 26, 2004 - 11:09 pm:

I used a diaper pail as a garbage can. Stinky diapers got bagged up right away in little bags that I had, just for that purpose. I don't recall my kids' rooms stinking that much, but that was a long time ago.

By Christylee on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 12:27 am:

Add me to the list that had a diaper genie but didn't use it... I just saved bags and threw them away as they were changed. They have these little bags made just for that now that are scented that maybe you could use in case you can't put it outside right away.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 12:57 am:

Back in the day, lol, when diaper pails had a purpose, they made little disk that went into the pail that countered the odder of the dirty diapers (like the pucks they put in urinals). But they let off their own not so appealing odder.. And back in the day of cloth, which was the original purpose of the pail, most women kept a water mixture (often bleach/water) in the pail to keep the diapers from staining and they washed diapers daily. And the BM was flushed down the toilet not just thrown in the pail. Some of those new diaper things hold days/weeks worth of diapers. Where else does that stink have to go except in the air... Yuck!!

I did the diaper pail with the oldest for about a month. Then I washed it out and converted it into her laundry hamper and started to just use the kitchen trash. I used a small can at the time that I took out twice a day. So they weren't in the house long and.. In an open can they don't seem to breed the smell like they do in one of those closed up diaper pails..

Time tested hints. LOL Dump out the BM if at all possible. Buy scented trash bags (small can size). Do not throw the diapers away in her room, ventilation in the room is not the best and the odor lingers. Buy stock in room spray... Plan to take the kitchen trash out regularly.

And remember this too shall pass... Like with child birth, the memories of dirty diapers become faint with time. You don't remember all the details but you remember that they stunk... LOL And when the kids are grown many would give anything to change a dirty diaper again... That is one thing about motherhood, everything seems huge while you are going through it (child birth, sleepless nights, bottle breaking, potty training etc.) but our minds seem to forget the "bad" parts about parenting and only remember the good. It is probably a way to keep us producing because I am sure if we all could remember everything about our first child we would never have had a second, third, fourth..... LOL You remember but not in great detail. Like potty training, it seems like a nightmare while you are caught up in the middle of it but a few years after they are trained you are still amazed that you succeeded and can't even begin to explain how it happened... Which is probably why there is no clear, this is how to raise a child book out there. LOL Parenting is an "if I had only known" experience for sure.

Anyway, You aren't the only one with a stinky pail.. Why they still make them is beyond me and why on earth we all think with our first one that we just have to have one kind of makes me wonder. LOL But I think there are a lot of items out there slated towards the first time mother. Example, changing tables, much easier to use the floor... Hope you get rid of your stink..

By Dawnk777 on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 01:31 am:

I always dumped the poop in the toilet, if it was solid. We called those "plunkers!" LOL! Of course, you couldn't do it with the loose poops, but that didn't happen all that often. I had the little scented bags and just wrapped the poopie diapers.

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 03:34 am:

I agree with Bobbie - diaper pails are for when you are using cloth diapers. Otherwise, you are talking about trash, which should be put in a trash container and gotten out of the house as quickly as possible. I can't imagine any reason for keeping a soiled disposable (note - disposable) diaper in the house for very long.

I think a "diaper genie" or any similar product intended to enable one to store soiled disposable diapers in the house for more than an hour or two is just another well advertised waste of money.

My dad was incontinent and we used adult diapers for him for the last three years of his life. And when they came off dad they went into a plastic bag, tied, and outside as quickly as possible. The only time they sat in the house was late at night when mom and I were both in our sleeping clothes and it was too cold to take them outside without getting dressed.

By Andi on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 09:15 am:

I have the Diaper Champ as well. I keep it outside of her room in the hall and that really helped with the smell. Now I never smell it and I have a really good nose. Whenever I change the Trashbag...every 3-4 days...I spray it with Lysol and I also buy those bags from Glad that have a scent to them.
Good Luck.:) I can't wait for DD to be out of Diapers, only 11/2 more years.....AHHHHHHHHHH!

By Feona on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 09:47 am:

We had the diaper genie. Too much work. We used grocery bags and got them out of the house as soon as possible.

I also keep a garbage container in the hall way for all garbage. Goes out about once a day.

By Karen~moderator on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 12:12 pm:

I never used a diaper pail or anything. Like Amy, mine went directly into the trash, which, also like Amy, went out once or twice daily, and the poopie diapers went immediately outside to the trash, wrapped in the plastic bags newspapers come in!

By Imamommyx4 on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 12:19 pm:

I sprinkle a little Carpet Fresh powder in the bottom of all of my garbage cans occasionally. Keeps everything smelling fresh. Plus dump solid poop in the pot and bag the rest immediately.

By Breann on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 01:43 pm:

We had the diaper genie. Didn't like it. We just took the dirty diapers outside to the trash can immediately.

The older the baby the stinkier the diapers.

We have the Bath and Body Works oil plug in things. They work well at making things smell nice.

I prefer just a clean, no scented smell :)

By Boxzgrl on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 02:22 pm:

I have one collecting dust in DD's room somewhere. I think I used it 3-4 times. I do what everyone else does, kitchen trash thats out a few times a day!

By Lauram on Monday, December 27, 2004 - 02:50 pm:

I actually used the Diaper Genie and liked it. I guess I'm in the minority. We used to call them "Diaper Sausages!" I could never change the containers though. Dh always helped me with that. We only used the genie for poopy ones- the other ones went in the regular garbage. I can't imagine hiking dirty diapers down to the garbage cans in the middle of the night. That would have been a major nightmare.

By Rayanne on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 09:53 am:

I bought some little trash bags that have a vanilla scent to them and I have been putting her poopy diapers in there now. Her room smells sooooo much better. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. Thank you all so much. :)

We use the "Neat Diaper Disposal System" by Safety 1st. It's REAL good about keeping the smell in. It's fairly inexpensive too. I buy the bags on Ebay for cheap too.
