Taking DS into the ER

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Taking DS into the ER
By Melana on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 10:43 am:

He's been jaundice since he was born, but as the days have gone by it's gotten worse. I hate that I have to put him back into the hospital :( On a happy note, my DD LOVES him, she hasn't gotten jelous once, she gives him hugs and kisses all the time and the first thing she does in the morning is run to his bassinet sayng "baby baby!" It's making it a lot easier to deal with, she loves to help by bringing me diapers and his cloths to dress him in the mornings. She's really being a trooper about sharing me with another baby. So I guess this has been a rant and a brag all in one, LOL. I'll post tomorrow if we end up staying over night and let you all know what's going on.

By Colette on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 11:38 am:

Good luck with the jaundice. I hope he gets well soon. Very happy to hear your dd loves him.

By Tink on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 11:46 am:

My dd was the best at being mommy's little helper. It sure does make everything easier when you aren't worrying too much about sibling rivalry.

I hope everything goes okay at the hospital. None of my dks had jaundice badly enough to warrant a trip to the ER. Let us know how it all goes.

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 11:49 am:

I hope he's feeling better soon! I'm glad to hear DD is handling the new baby well!

By Boxzgrl on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 12:11 pm:

Good LUck at the hospital!

By Lauram on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 12:55 pm:

Both my kids had hyperbilirubenemia (very severe jaundice). My first son got to at least 26 and my second to 25. Let me know if you have questions- I've done LOTS of research on this one! Good luck!

By Kaye on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 01:36 pm:

My hubby is an a med book somewhere, when he was born he had bad jaundice and was documented to have the highest number and still live. I don't know what the number was though..LOL

By Melanie on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 02:13 pm:

(((HUGS))) Ds #1 had to be hospitalized for jaundice. I think he was only there for 24 hours before he was okay to come home. He had no problems after that. I hope your little guy is better very quickly.

By Amecmom on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 03:40 pm:

Good luck and keep us posted. Hope he's better soon!

Oh poor guy, see if they can give you the machine that you wrap him in, I can't think of what its called but my girlfriend borrowed one from the hospital here and it helped a lot.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 09:50 pm:

My older daughter was a month early and her bilirubin got up to 17. At 21 they would have put her under a bili-light. But that was as high as it went.

By Fraggle on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 09:16 am:

How is he doing today? Hope he is better.:)

By Lauram on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 10:59 am:

The wrapping machine is only ok if the number is low enough. If it gets too high, the child MUST be admitted! Too high of a bilirubin count can cause brain damage! (Past 25). We are still dealing with the reprecussions of what happened to my first son today! He is thought to have a mild form of kernicterus (brain damage caused by a bilirubin count of over 25) and has Tourette's, Adhd and sensory integration disorder most likely because of what happened to him as a newborn (and having a genetic predisposition). This is a PREVENTABLE condition, but action must be taken VERY quickly. My first ds was hospitalized on Day 4 and by then was already experiencing brain damage. My second ds was hospitalized on day 3 and got to 25 as well, but luckily was put right under the lights. My first son needed what is called triple bank phototherapy. He was very close to a blood transfusion (before phototherapy that was the only option.) Anyhow, I could go on, but this is a rare but VERY SERIOUS problem that can be prevented by phototherapy. It is much better to aggressively treat it than let it go and hope for the best. BTW- 60% of babies experience some form of jaundice. This is not what I am talking about. This is VERY SEVERE. Melana- I'm glad your son is being treated. I KNOW how hard it is to have them readmitted- BTDT (TWICE). Trust me when I say this is truly the best thing to do! Good luck and let us know how it goes! (BTW- are you breastfeeding?! If so, I can speak about that as well and how it relates to this).

By Lauram on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 11:02 am:

Here is a link about Kernicterus. Beware! This is SCARY stuff. http://www.neonatology.org/syllabus/kernicterus.html BTW- My kids both entered the first phase of encephalaphy. My oldest has had problems because of it. My youngest is still in "wait and see mode." I'm going to look for another one too that I wish I had seen when we were going through all of this the first time!

By Lauram on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 11:07 am:

Very good, well written infor on this site. Again, VERY SCARY so read with caution! http://www.kernicterus.org/

I'm still trying to find the site where I learned all my info. It's a parent advocacy group. I'll keep looking!

By Lauram on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 11:08 am:

Here it is! http://www.pickonline.org/ This is a good one too.

Just checking in for an update! Keeping you and the baby in my thoughts and prayers!!

By Melana on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 02:02 pm:

I took him in and they said for now he's fine, to just keep an eye on him and if it doesn't get any better in a week or so or gets worse to bring him back in.

By Lauram on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 02:33 pm:

Great! Sounds good!

By Boxzgrl on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 07:15 pm:

Well good luck to your little man.

By Rayanne on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 - 09:04 pm:

Good luck to him, and I hope he gets better really soon. {{{{HUGS}}}}

By Vicki on Thursday, December 9, 2004 - 08:19 am:
