Kids---Kinda funny, kinda annoying

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Kids---Kinda funny, kinda annoying

We have had a busy Saturday. At 10:30 this morning we had a birthday party for a friend's 4 yo dd. Then we went to the town parade which ended at the city park which had a craft/kids fair. We watched the parade then went to the craft fair then played at the park. Next we were on our way to the mall to get our Christmas angel gifts and 3 yo dd said "I am so hungry. Can we have Pizza Hut? DH said sure. Just as he was about to pull into the Pizza Hut, dd noticed Chuck E Cheese across the street and noted to us that she had changed her mind and wanted Chuck E. Cheese. Their pizza is the best per my dd. DH said he didn't care so there we go. We finally get out of the torture chamber with her prizes in tow and off to Wal-mart we go to get the last couple of things I needed. I warned dd as we went in to Wal-mart that I would NOT go to the toy dept nor was I buying her anything else today so don't even ask. As we were passing the electronics, she said, "Can I play a game?" No, I'm tired, in a hurry and won't to go home was my polite reply. (It's 6:30 pm at this point and I'm really tired.)
She started to whine, "You never let me do anything!"
I didn't know whether to laugh or yell. I stopped dead in my tracks and said "I BEG YOUR PARDON!" then politely listed off our day that had been predominately FOR her.
She looked down and very sweetly said "I'm sorry mommy. You're a good mommy. I love you. Thank you."
Then I didn't know whether to cry or laugh. I just hugged her. (Still didn't stop to play the game though).
Kids--you gotta love 'em!

That's funny that you spent the whole day "doing stuff", yet she doesn't get to do "anything!"

LOL! I am thoroughly impressed that your response worked!! I usually resort to a simple "That's right, and I'm the meanest mom in the world, too.". :) I like to beat them to the punch. ;))

She's told me on several occasions since Saturday that I'm a good mommy and I let her play lots of games and have lots of fun. But the statements sort of have a question mark at the end. She's a good kid and lots of fun. The whole thing kind of cracked me up.

That sounds like my boys 7 & 10 your so mean you never let me do anything and i respond like Melanie = ) the things they get to do compared to the things i got to do they would feel neglected yeah kids try eating at home every night lol = ) ... not that that is a bad thing at all because it's definitely not but that's what i did pretty much all of the time = )
