One of those days ... (potty training - a little graphic - fair warning)

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: One of those days ... (potty training - a little graphic - fair warning)
By Amecmom on Thursday, November 18, 2004 - 07:41 pm:

Well today definatly takes the cake as far as parenting goes. I am trying to potty train my son who is almost three. We have been hit and miss. He knows when he is going to have a bm. He even goes to one corner specifically to do it in his pull-up. If I could put the potty there, I would, but there's not enough space. Anyway, yesterday I asked him why he didn't just go on the potty rather than to the corner. He said, "Because I didn't want to". Unless I'm way off base, this is telling me that he can go on the potty, but choses not to. Well, I told him that he would not get any new Thomas trains until he started using the potty. Every time he did his business there, he would get a new train. Expensive, but less expensive than diapers in the long run ...

Today, he sat on the potty several times, but did nothing there.

When I was on the phone, he called me asking for my help. It seems he had a bm in his pull up, but was trying to put it in the potty. He's smart enough to actually be sneaky, but he's never been until now.

Well, there was poop all over the potty.

Of course I had to give him a bath. After his bath, I knelt down to empty his little tub. All of a sudden, I felt this warm, wet liquid on my legs. He peed on me! I know he didn't do it on purpose, but I wish he would have been able to tell me that he had to go. After all, the potty was right there.

I just don't know whether to laugh or cry at this point! Do I just stop the potty training? He's ready, but maybe he's just too resistant? It is so frustrating. He's a big boy, and I'm really getting tired of changing his diapers. Hefting a thirty five pound boy to change him is getting tough.

Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better.

I'd stop for now. You have a newborn and this sounds like it's pretty stressful. Especially with all of the holidays coming up. Start again in January.

Tonight, I asked him if he needed to go peepee before going to bed. He said no. I said, "We'll let's try anyway. It's good to get into the routine of going potty before going to bed." I think he was just too tired to argue. Not a minute later he said, "I did peepees." He was very excited!
I praised him lavishly.

Ame, Big HUGS!!!! I agree with Colette, my 5 year old brother did what your son is doing until he was about a month shy of his 4th birthday. My mom was *way* stressed, because my sister and I had been a breeze to potty train. Ry just didn't want to go, so he refused. Then, almost like magic, he decided it was time to use the potty, and it's been fine since. It was the joke of the family for a while, but it happened in time. Good luck honey, I definately know where you are coming from, my DD is doing the same thing currently!!

That is what my son did. He was not trained until he was 3 1/2. One day out of the blue he went
#2 and from that point on he was trained.
I have heard boys are harder to train. Maybe its true. My dd was a breeze and was trained when she turned 2. Good luck!

Both my boys have been difficult with the BMs. That didn't come for my older one until several months after he was trained with pee. My youngest is trained with pee and not poop right now. He does the same thing in the corner. I think it is scary for them- that's why they don't do it until they are ready. I wouldn't push it....

Today was a good day! He only had one pee accident. Otherwise he went on the potty - a good five times. The last time, he went of his own accord, not because I asked him to sit. He went to the potty, pulled down his pull up and did pee on his own! I was so excited!

You're right, the bms will come when he's ready. I'm just glad he's showing more of an interest and less resistance. At least for today ...
