Tear duct surgery

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Tear duct surgery
By Jelygu on Monday, November 8, 2004 - 11:40 pm:

I took Christopher to an eye dr today for his problem with his left eye. They recommended surgery to repair his clogged duct. I know that it is a simple surgery, but I am still so nervous that my baby will have to be put to sleep! Has anyone had any experience with this surgery? What should I expect?

No experience with this, but my ds had surgery when he was 2. It IS nervewracking! When will it be done? I am sending you good thoughts and hope all goes well! I also hope someone can answer your question! Try to stay calm and have faith in the doctor's care.

My twins both had this and I don't believe they put them to sleep. Now this was 15 years ago and I could be wrong.

I just remembered them being extremly grumpy afterwards.

No experience with this particular medical problem, but I do know someone whose child had the same surgery and he was just fine.

My youngest DS has had 5 eye surgeries, T&A and 3 sets of tubes - first surgery was when he was about 10 months old. Nothing can take away the worry and pain you feel inside when your little one is having surgery, but please know that he will be fine.

Lots of {{{{{{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}}}}!!!

The Dr. said they do put him to sleep, with a mask though and not the tube down his throat. Thanks for all the support :)

My dd had this when she was 13 months old. Not a real big deal, they did put her to sleep, but told me that some doctors just do an in-office type thing. Be prepared for them to put him to sleep though so you won't have any big suprises.

For a child that young the recovery part is the worse part, I remember Hailey crying while she was waking from the anesthesia. :( But that was it, and the rest of the day she was a little sleepy but did well, and now she is 17 months old and not 1 problem with her eye. Good Luck to you! We went to a Childrens Hospital in Nashville, we had a visit to the doctor and then scheduled a day for the surgery. Again I hope everything goes well for you. (((hugs)))

My DD had this at age 8 months. It was no trouble at all, and she immediately was doing great. We even played on the hospital play ground after being released after surgery (same day). I was more nervous than she ever could have been. Her eye was also immediately better and no longer tearing or getting infected. I was shocked at how fast the surgery even went. We were in and out pretty quickly.
