DD and the pacifier!!!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: DD and the pacifier!!!

Well today I took the advice I had read on here before to cut the tip of DDs pacifier so she would not finding it interesting anymore. When she first saw it she kept looking at it and saying, "Uh Oh... All Done." Then after a few minutes of that she would just start cracking up everytime she saw it. It was quite funny for a while. But now its 3 hours past her naptime and she wont sleep. Everytime I lay her down and say "Night-night" she stars laughing and looking for her pacifier. I give it to her and she just lays in bed laughing. As soon as I go out of the room she gets out of bed and plays so we repeat the whole routine. Shes gotta give eventually...... right?

I'm going through the same thing! My son has six of them in his crib. He likes to suck on one and hold the others. I tried to put him down for a nap with none. He went ballistic! So, I relented and let him have only one. It took him forever to get to sleep, but he finally did.

He has no problem taking a nap in the car without one. He does not use them at all, except for sleep. I hope we can break the habit soon!

Good luck!
Ame

I remember going through this with my oldest dd. That is too funny about her laughing like that. I gave my dd a cup of water to go to sleep with to substitute it, and it worked really good and then I took that away eventually, but it was much easier. Good Luck! :)

When the DKs were 10 months old, Shane had sucked through another pacifier, and I said no more! We had actually built up to that for a month or so, they only got their binkies at night and naps, then only night, and once he wore the last one out I threw all binkies away. I never did the cutting the end thing, (Shane did a good enough job of that for me!) but it was only a few days without before they were perfectly adjusted to not having one. Hang in there, it gets easier!!

Shes been only getting it at naptimes since 12 months so I think it will be easier in a sense. Shes got her "blankie" now so she'll leave one security object for another :) Atleast the blanket has no harmful effects on her teeth though! Thanks for the advice, she finally fell asleep and took about a 45 minute nap which is 1/2 of what she usually does.

I cut the tip of my ds's pacifier when he was around 2. He looked at it the first time and said "what is this?" He didn't touch it after that. He did have a hard time falling a sleep for a few days, but he was fine after that. Give it a few days and she will be fine.

Oh that is so hard to give up.. MY daugher(Who is now 5)didnt get rid of hers until she was almost 3.. Oh what a nightmare..she didnt have it all the time, mostly for sleeping.. We cut the tip and she got so mad :)...but that is 2 yrs ago and she still remembers the paci.
Now Faith, thankfully doesnt like a paci..SOmetimes she make suck 4 or 5 times and then falls asleep and it falls out of her mouth, definitely not a paci baby..which will make things alot easier.

We did this with Timmy over this past summer. He was 2 then and it was a struggle for a day or two and then he was done with them. He would still ask but would accept the answer of "they're all gone."

Hang in there.....the first couple of days are the worst. Be warned though if you give in now, when you do take it away it will be 10 times worse.

I did the same thing to Emma's pacifier when she was two and she carried it around with her for that day and kept saying "Paci broken" and then finally she threw it in the trash and told it bye bye and never asked for it again. This is a child that use to carry 4 pacifiers around every where she went.
